Update KB4011730 fixes a Word 2016 vulnerability
Update KB4011730 (Security Update for Word 2016) is intended to close the security gap CVE-2018-0919. This vulnerability allows an attacker to provoke a memory overflow through a specially crafted Office document file. As a result, unauthorized information can be read from memory areas. Not an extremely critical error, but one that should be fixed. However, this update is only available for .msi installations (not for click-to-run installations).
Issues with Word 2016 after Update KB4011730
I’ve mentioned it briefly within my blog post Microsoft Office Patchday (March 13, 2018). Users installing update KB4011730 are facing issues. After the update install, they are no longer able to open Word files or save new documents. In some cases Word 2016 crashes. This Technet forum thread discusses this issue, and Microsoft documented it as a ‘Known Issue’ within the kb article. Also at askwoody.com is a post, mentions Word 2016 crashes.
A workaround for Word 2016 issues
Microsoft proposes at this web site to install the non security relevant update KB4018295 from March 6, 2018. It shall fixes the load/save issues as well as the slow performance behavior of Word 2016. If that doesn’t help, uninstall update KB4011730.
