Firmware-Update for Surface 3 (May 30th 2018)

[German]It was a big surprise and I could not believe it, but Microsoft has released a firmware update for Surface 3 end of May 2018. It also contains a mitigation against the Spectre v2 CPU vulnerability.

I noticed the announcement while browsing the Technet blog. Production of Surface 3 ended 2016, and the last firmware update has been released on August 2016.

The new Surface 3 update is for devices running Windows 10 and supports the following builds.

• These updates include new firmware for the Surface UEFI on devices with Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update). In addition, the firmware update is intended to mitigate potential vulnerabilities, including the Spectre V2 vulnerability described in Microsoft Security Advisory 180002.

For devices with Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 update), the firmware update also includes a new driver for Intel(R) HD Graphics, which improves compatibility with high-resolution external displays under Windows 10 April 2018 update.

These updates are available in MSI format from the Surface 3 driver and firmware pages in the Microsoft Download Center.
