In the blog post Announcing Cumulative Updates for .NET Framework for Windows 10 October 2018 Update, Microsoft reveals some details. The background: We are now receiving updates for .NET Framework on the Windows client almost every month.
Cumulative .NET Framework updates, what's new??
Microsoft says: Starting with Windows 10 October 2018 Update and Windows Server 2019, .NET Framework fixes will be delivered through a Cumulative Update for .NET Framework. Microsoft intends to enable the following changes:
- Provide more flexibility for installing .NET Framework updates (for example, IT Admins can more selectively test line of business applications before broadly deploying).
- Ability to respond to critical customer needs, when needed, with higher velocity, with standalone .NET Framework patches.
According to the Microsoft blog post, the cumulative update for the .NET Framework has the following properties:

- Independent: The .NET Framework updates are released independently of Windows Cumulative Update
- Cumulative: The latest update completely updates all .NET Framework versions on the affected Windows system..
Even if Microsoft ships those cumulative updates for the .NET Framework independently from cumulative Windows Update, cumulative updates to the .NET Framework will be released at the same release frequency as Windows 10.

The cumulative updates for .NET Framework are to be delivered through Windows Update, as the Microsoft image above shows. System administrators relying on Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and similar update management applications will also receive these new update for .NET Framework when checking for updates applicable to upcoming versions of Windows 10 October 2018 Update and Windows Server 2019.

System administrators who rely on the Microsoft Update Catalog can access the cumulative update for .NET Framework by searching for the Knowledge Based (KB) update number of each version. Note that a single update contains fixes for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.7.2 products.
Updates for several Windows versions
For Windows versions that are still in support, Microsoft has the following plans about how to distribute the .NET framework updates:
- Windows 10 October 2018 Update (Version 1809): A cumulative update for the .NET framework, along with the cumulative security updates for Windows will be offered.
- Windows 10 April 2018 (Version 1803) and earlier versions of Windows 10: A cumulative update for each version of Windows (which then includes the .NET Framework updates), may be shipped.
- Windows 7 und Windows 8.1: Multiple separate .NET Framework updates (as before) for each version of Windows will be released.
