The online role-playing game 'Town of Salem' by BlankMediaGames (BMG) has been on the market since 2014 and is quite popular. It is also available on Steam. At the weekend media reported that the platform was hacked and the data of 7.6 million player accounts were deducted.

The hack was discovered on December 28, 2018, when a copy of Town of Salem's hacked database was anonymously sent to DeHashed, a hacked database search engine. The database suggested that the server had been compromised and the hackers had access to the entire gamer database. The database contains 7,633,234 unique email addresses (most of the email providers are Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.com).

After analyzing the entire database, DeHashed announced, that the compromised data contained the following information about the players:

  • E-mail addresses and usernames
  • hashed passwords (in phpass, MD5(WordPress) and MD5(phpBB3) formats)
  • IP addresses and game and forum activities

Some payment information (including full name, billing and shipping addresses, IP information and payment amounts)

No credit card information has been obtained, according to reports. Some additional information is discussed in this Steam announcement. There I found a link with additional information. So it seems to be a 'hacker collective', that was able to log in under an admin account of the phpBB forum on December 13, 2018, as someone wrote at reddit.com. Within this reddit.com thread you may find more details.
