I have already been information by blog reader Andreas (by e-mail) and by Joschi in this comment (thanks for that).

Changes …

Of course I immediately checked with my Thunderbird version 60.9.1, if the update will beoffered, because the previous updates were not offered there. If you are still using the 60 version of Thunderbird, this update is now been offered (at least I installed the update with Thunderbird 60.9.1 portable).

Thunderbird 68.3.1 Upgrade

According to the release notes the above observation is confirmed for Thunderbird 68.3.1:

Thunderbird version 68.3.1 provides an automatic update from Thunderbird version 60. If you have installed Lightning, Thunderbird's calendar add-on, it will automatically be updated to match the new version of Thunderbird. Refer to this Calendar troubleshooting article in case of problems.

The following changes have also been made:

  • With the dark theme set, unread messages are no longer displayed in blue to distinguish them from tagged messages
  • Account setup now uses client-side DNS MX lookup instead of relying on a server.

In addition, the for Thunderbird version 68.3.1 fixes for the following bugs are listed:

  • The search in the LDAP address book crashed under certain circumstances
  • Message navigation with the back and forward buttons may not work
  • The icons of the WebExtension toolbar were displayed too small
  • Calendar: Tasks due today were not printed in bold
  • Calendar: Last day of long running events was not displayed

Known issue: When upgrading from Thunderbird version 60 to version 68, add-ons are not automatically updated during the upgrade process. However, they are updated during the add-on update check. It is of course possible to reinstall compatible add-ons via the Add-On Manager or via addons.thunderbird.net. The system requirements for the different operating system versions (see also):

  • Windows: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or above
  • Mac: Mac OS X 10.9 or higher
  • Linux: GTK+ 3.4 or higher

By the way, the Thunderbird is free. The download is available here.

Not sure what is going on, but my Thunderbird (US-English version) was automatically updated to 68.3.1 at the beginning of the week (12/16/19) and now my email doesn't work. When I open it, no messages (or the accounts) show up on the screen. I go to get messages for one of my accounts and the request just disappears. I go to "About Thunderbird" in the Help section and I get the swirling wait circle with "Applying update…" next to it. I let that run for 24 hours and nothing happened. I'm posting this here in case somebody else is having the same problem.

    Help > troubleshooting > about:profiles
then pick the default profile at the top and "launch"

Let me know if the solution above works.
Before I got the above reply from Mozilla support, I rolled back Win 10 to a earlier recovery Point and got back TB 60.9.1, which works very good. I also disabled auto updates of TB.
