Windows 7: Bug fix for black desktop promised for all

win7[German]Microsoft provides an U turn in terms of the bug fix for the black desktop background in Windows 7. Redmond has updates a few hours ago the support article about security update KB4534310. While it previously stated, that a fix will come for ESU customers, Microsoft is saying now, a fix is now coming for all users.

Background: The black desktop background bug

The security updates KB4534310 (Monthly Quality Rollup) and KB4534314 (Security-only update) for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 that were released on January 14, 2020 caused some users to end up with a black desktop background. I had already mentioned this in the blog post Windows 7: Update KB4534310 causes a black Desktop. The odd thing: Windows 7 reached on Janury 14, 2020 the end of life, so regular users don't get more updates. Only customers who bought ESU support are receiving updates up to 2023.

Bug confirmed, fixe for ESU customers announced

Last Friday Microsoft has updated the support article KB4534310 and added a 'known issue' section with the note:

After installing KB4534310, your desktop wallpaper might display as black when set to Stretch.

That's what we all know (and what I've written within previous blog posts. Microsoft also wrote last Friday that they were working on a fix. Customers who booked the Extended Security Update Program (ESU) with a support extension through updates for 2020 should receive a fix update. Normal users would have gone away empty-handed, triggering a shit-storm against Microsoft.

Microsoft takes the U turn

This night I got a user comment to the blog post Windows 7 Update KB4534310: Black Desktop Bug confirmed, that Microsoft has made an U turn. They write now within the support article:

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release, which will be released to all customers running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Let's wait, how long it takes to ship this bug fix update. Addendum: The fix is available, see  Windows 7: Update KB4539602 fixes black Desktop.
