[German]Today a brief information for administrators using VEEAM Instant VM Recovery. In certain cases, vSphere may be at risk of data loss if not responded to. In the meantime a patch is available to fix the problem.

VEEAM Instant VM Recovery

With Instant VM Recovery you can instantly restore virtual or physical machines as VMs in a production environment. This is done by restoring the VM directly from the compressed and de-duplicated backup file.

On Windows, Linux and UNIX, entire systems or even individual files can be restored granularly to a specific point in time. According to VEEAM, this also works with the huge amounts of files in unstructured NAS storage.

Instant VM Recovery helps to improve recovery time targets and minimize disruption and downtime of production VMs. The product supports both Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. Details are available in this VEEAM article.

Data loss in VMware vSphere environments

However, older versions of the software can cause data loss in VMware vSphere environments in certain cases. I came across this German notice here a few days ago. The problem is described in this VEEAM support article.

Performing Instant VM Recovery in VMware vSphere environments can result in data loss when using the Quick Migration feature to move published VM disks to production storage and complete the recovery.

This issue was identified internally by Veeam Quality Control at the end of 2019, and the fix has been included (among others) in version 20191210 of Update 4b. However, no KB support article has been created to highlight that this particular issue has been resolved because its scope was originally estimated to be much smaller. You are not affected:

  • if the VMware vSphere license includes the Storage vMotion feature, because in this case Veeam completes immediate VM recovery with this technology,
  • or if update 4b has already been installed in the Veeam Backup & Replication™ console in January 2020 (or in December 2019 through the 20191210 distribution package).

Check the latest version of Veeam Backup & Replication. It must be 9.5.4.2866 (update 4b). If you are affected, VEEAM strongly recommends to apply the update as soon as possible. Details about download and installation can be found in this KB article.
