Windows 10 Version 2004 will be released on May 27, 2020

[German]Windows 10 May 2020 Update (2004 version) is expected to be released today, May 27, 2020. Microsoft has already released the life cycle data. And the Media Creation Tool is already available.

Release date and end of support known

Microsoft maintains the list of release and end-of-support dates for all versions of Windows in the Windows Life Cycle Information Sheet. Feature updates for Windows 10 that are released in the spring generally receive 18 months of support. Only the autumn updates are supported in the business variants over 30 months. The following table is now available on the German life cycle page. The German page Informationsblatt zum Lebenszyklus von Windows and the page for Japan mentions now the release and end of life dates. Here is the German table.

There, 27 May 2020 is shown as the release date and 14 December 2021 as the end-of-life date. The US site does not have this info yet – the colleagues from deskmodder.de noticed that.

Media Creation Tool 2004 available

Furthermore, the Media Creation Tool 2004 in build 19041.1 is already available for download. Thereupon the following Tweet.

But at the moment it doesn't make sense to download and run MCT 2004 in the hope that the installation ISO can be created. If you call the tool, it reports 'Download updated media creation tool' in the German version and aborts.

The above tweet confirms this for the English version – Microsoft has not yet released the download.

Addendum: Now it's possible to download Windows 10 version 2004 with Media Creation Tool 2004.

Several websites released

In the blog post Windows 10 version 2004 is probably just around the corner I had pointed out that Microsoft has unlocked the status page for Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows Server, version 2004 as well as the page with fixed issues. But these pages are still without content.

Addendum: The availability of Windows 10 version 2004 has been announced now.

I would wait…

But if you are not extremely curious and want to test (as an insider you could do that for quite some time), you should wait. Windows 10 Version 2004 still contains numerous bugs according to my information – but I haven't come to test yet to list and verify everything.

Fu Weissinger points out to me on Twitter that when using the ISO from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) – probably identical to the MSDN/MVS variant – he had problems with the browsers. With an in-place upgrade, the desktop was gone.

No forced update

There is no need to panic that a running Windows 10 suddenly triggers the upgrade to version 2004. All feature updates are now offered optionally and have to be confirmed manually for download and installation. Only when the support expires, the update is forced.

• But Windows 10 version 1709 has been extended by 6 months (see Windows 10 Version 1709: Support extended till October 2020).And the consumers without volume license version would have been affected by Windows 10 version 1809. Here too, there is an extension of the support (see
