[German]Microsoft has begun rolling out the Chromium Edge via Windows Update to additional users who are not participating in the Windows Insider Preview program.

In February 2020 I had already reported in the article Microsoft Chromium Edge Rollout via Windows Update started that the new Edge browser is already distributed to Windows Insider. The rollout will be done in waves. At the beginning of the week, Microsoft announced a long list of features that will not be developed further under Windows 10 2004 (see my blog post Windows 10 Version 2004: Deprecated/removed features). This includes the old (legacy) version of the Microsoft Edge browser. Consequently, Microsoft has to distribute the new Edge browser, which is based on Google's Chromium, to Windows 10 users.
Chromium Edge is rolled out
Now Microsoft has started to roll out the update for the Chromium Edge to Windows 10 clients via Windows Update, as ZDNet writes here. Microsoft has updated support articles KB4541301, KB4541302 and KB4559309. Ghacks.net have noticed this.
KB4541301 for Windows 10 Version 1803/1809
Update KB4541301 is available for Windows 10 version 1803 and 1809 via Windows Update. Microsoft states the following quality improvements for this Edge Update:
- Start menu pins, tiles, and shortcuts for the current version of Microsoft Edge will migrate to the new Microsoft Edge.
- Taskbar pins and shortcuts for the current version of Microsoft Edge will migrate to the new Microsoft Edge.
- The new Microsoft Edge will be pinned to the taskbar. If the current version of Microsoft Edge is already pinned, it will be replaced.
- The new Microsoft Edge will add a shortcut to the desktop. If the current version of Microsoft Edge already has a shortcut, it will be replaced.
- By default, most protocols that Microsoft Edge handles will be migrated to the new Microsoft Edge.
- The current version of Microsoft Edge will be hidden from UX surfaces in the OS. This includes settings, applications, and any file or protocol support dialog boxes.
- Attempts to start the current version of Microsoft Edge will redirect to the new Microsoft Edge.
- The First Run Experience (FRE) will auto-launch the first time that a device restarts after the new Microsoft Edge is installed.
- Data from earlier versions of Microsoft Edge (such as passwords, favorites, open tabs) will be available in the new Microsoft Edge.
- This new Microsoft Edge does not support uninstalling of this update.
- To view supported features, please see the Microsoft Edge Platform Status.
In the KB article, Microsoft specifies the requirements for installation for both versions of Windows 10.
KB4541302 for Windows 10 Version 1903 und 1909
Update KB4541302 is rolled out for Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909 and makes the same adjustments as update KB4541301.

- The new Microsoft Edge will be pinned to the taskbar. If the current version of Microsoft Edge is already pinned, it will be replaced.

So this update makes sure that the new Edge Browser is anchored in the system, even with shortcuts in the taskbar and start menu. The settings of the old Edge should be migrated. After the installation the old Edge-Browser will be hidden and cannot be accessed anymore. How to run the Edge in side-by-side mode is discussed in the article Run old and new Edge in Side-by modus. How to block an update of the browser is described in the article Microsoft's Chromium Edge will be distributed via update soon.
