Windows 10 V1909: Preview Update KB5001396 (April 22, 2021)

[German]Microsoft has released the preview update KB5001396 for Windows 10 version 1909 on April 22, 2021. One of the new features is the introduction of the "News and Interests" function in the Windows 10 Taskleist (was already going around the Internet the days, but I had deliberately not addressed in the blog). Below is some information about the preview update KB5001396.

At this point a small classification of Windows 10 version 1909 and the preview updates for readers who do not have it quite present. Preview updates are released in the third and fourth week of a month for Windows 10, should be optional, and this Microsoft to test if there are problems. The fixes then arrive on systems on the following month's regular patchday. For administrators in corporate environments, the preview updates are meant to give them the opportunity to test if there are any issues with hardware and/or software.

For Windows 10 version 1909, the end of support for some variants is May 2021. Systems with Windows 10 version 1909 will receive security updates for the Home, Pro and Workstation variants for the last time on May 11, 2021 – and will then drop out of support (see also Windows 10: EOL for v1909 soon and Reliability Updates KB4023057 shipped again in April 2021).

Update KB5001396 for Windows 10 V1909

Cumulative preview update KB5001396, dated April 22, 2021, is available for all versions of Windows 10 version 1909, as well as Windows Server 2019. The preview raises the operating system's build number to 18363.1533.

Highlights: News and interests and more

In the KB article, Microsoft highlights the introduction of the News and Interests feature as a particular highlight. An entry in the Windows taskbar will give users quick access to an integrated feed of dynamic content such as news, weather, sports and more, which will be updated throughout the day. Users are said to be able to personalize this feed to display relevant content. The rest of the highlights left me wondering – next month, support for version 1909 expires, and Microsoft fixes the following quirks:

  • Updates an issue that causes blank tiles to appear in the Start menu with names like "ms-resource:AppName" or "ms-resource:appDisplayName."
  • Adds the ability to adjust the idle time before a headset goes to sleep in the Settings for Windows Mixed Reality app.
  • Updates an issue that generates a stop error when you delete a file or folder from locations that are synced with Microsoft OneDrive.

I still remember, that I've blogged about empty tiles in the start menu with names like ms-resource:…. in the past (see my blog post Windows 10 V1903: Review of update KB4512941 from 9/2019).

Improvements and fixes

Microsoft lists the details of all improvements and fixes in its support post for update KB5001396 – security-wise, the update doesn't contain any fixes to close vulnerabilities, after all. Only fixes that are not already present on the machine through previous updates will be installed.

Microsoft strongly recommends that you install the latest Service Stack Update (SSU) dated April 13, 2021 (KB5001406) or the latest SSU KB5003155before the above preview update. The update is offered in a search under Windows Update, but is also available for download in the Microsoft Update Catalog. It is not offered in WSUS, but can be imported if required. This means that the preview update is optional and should only be installed if someone thinks that it fixes serious problems. Microsoft lists the known problem in the KB article that certificates are lost during a function update. Details can be found in the KB article. Final question: If anyone has installed the update, did they experience any problems?

Also, Microsoft has released an update directly to the Windows Update client to improve its reliability. This is rolled out outside of Windows Update if the machine is compatible and not an LTSC variant and updates have not been blocked via GPO.
