Windows 10/Server: Out-of-band Updates fixes Jan. 2022 patch day issues (Jan. 17, 2022)

Windows[German]Microsoft has also released a slew of security updates for Windows 10 and its server counterparts on January 17, 2022. These are supposed to fix the DC boot loop problem, as well as the IPSec VPN connection problem, which are caused with the security updates from Jan. 11, 2022. Here is an overview of these special updates for Windows 10 and the corresponding Windows Server versions (1607 etc).

I had blogged about the problems caused by the Windows security updates of January 11, 2022 in the blog post Microsoft Microsoft Januar 2022 Patchday Revisions (2022/01/14). The Out-of-band Updates from January 17, 2022 are supposed to fix various bugs, according to Microsoft. This Microsoft status page already has the notices.

Out-of-band Updates for Windows 10/Server

As of 1/17/2022, Microsoft has released the following special updates for Windows (clients and servers) to address the issues listed.

Update KB5010793 for Windows 10 20H2 bis 21H2/Server 20H2

Update KB5010793 is available for Windows 10 version 20H2 (all editions), Windows Server version 20H2 (all editions), Windows 10 version 21H1 (all editions), and Windows 10 version 21H2 (all editions). It raises the operating system build to 19042.1469 (20H2), 19043.1469 (20H1), and 19044.1469 (21H2). The update fixes the following issues and introduces the following changes:

  • Addresses a known issue that can cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Resolves a known issue that can cause Windows servers to restart unexpectedly after you install the January 11, 2022 update on domain controllers (DCs).
  • Resolves an issue that prevents Active Directory (AD) attributes from being written properly during a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) change operation when you make multiple attribute changes.
  • Resolves an issue that can prevent removable media that is formatted with the robust file system (ReFS) from being mounted or cause the removable media to be mounted in the RAW file format. This issue occurs after you install the January 11, 2022 update for Windows.

The update contains the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU), but requires that the update KB5005039 from August 10, 2021 is already installed. The special update is offered via Windows Update and in the Microsoft Update Catalog, but not via WUfB and WSUS. Regarding the numerous known problems, please refer to the support article KB5010793.

Update KB5010792 for Windows 10 Version 1909

Update KB5010792 is available for Windows 10 version 1909 Enterprise and upgrades the operating system build to 18363.2039. The update corrects the following issue:

Addresses a known issue that can cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.

The update includes the latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU), but requires that SSU KB5004748, dated July 13, 2021, already be installed. The special update is offered via Windows Update and in the Microsoft Update Catalog, but not via WUfB and WSUS. According to the support article, Microsoft is not aware of any problems at the moment.

Update KB5010791 for Windows Server Version 1909

Update KB5010791 for Windows Server Version 1909 has been released on January 18, 2022 and raises the os build to 17763.2458. The details has been described within the blog post Out-of-band Updates for Windows Server 2019 fixes Jan. 2022 Patch day issues (Jan. 18, 2022).

Update KB5010790 for Windows 10 1607/Windows Server 2016

Update KB5010790 is available for Windows 10 version 1607 as well as Windows Server 2016 and upgrades the operating system build to 14393.4889. The update corrects the following issues:

  • Addresses a known issue that can cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Resolves a known issue that can cause Windows servers to restart unexpectedly after you install the January 11, 2022 update on domain controllers (DCs).
  • Resolves an issue that prevents Active Directory (AD) attributes from being written properly during a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) change operation when you make multiple attribute changes.

Update KB5010789 for Windows 10 1507 (RTM)

Update KB5010789 is available for Windows 10 version 1507 (RTM) and upgrades the operating system build to 10240.19179. The update corrects the following issues:

  • Addresses a known issue that can cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Resolves an issue that can prevent removable media that is formatted with the robust file system (ReFS) from being recovered or cause the removable media to be deployed in RAW file format. This issue occurs after you install the January 11, 2022 Windows Update.

When installed via Windows Update, SSU KB5001399 is offered (otherwise, it must be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog, but not via WUfB and WSUS. Regarding the known issues, please refer to support article KB5010789.
