Office 365: Outlook suddenly requests password (August 29, 2022)

[German]A quick question for the administrators among the readers. I just received an e-mail from a reader whose customers suddenly (i.e. probably since the weekend) want a Microsoft Outlook password. What is at issue: Does this only affect the systems set up by the reader in question with Microsoft Office 365, or are there others affected.

Readers' comments on the problem

German blog reader  Stefan mailed me on August 29, 2022 to describe his problem with his customers/users with Outlook as follows:

Good day,

We have already received calls from almost all clients who use Office 365 (Online Plan 1, i.e. only Outlook) that the password is being requested again. No updates have been applied, different Outlook versions (2016/2019) and different Windows versions are in use and nothing has been changed on the accounts. Since we specify and set up the complex passwords, the clients do not have them in their heads, of course, so it's a bit tedious.

Currently I don't have any information about the specific Outlook build and environment. But I user confirmed the issue in my German edition of this article, saying that connections to Exchange Online are affected. I still have also the feedback from Frank via Facebook: I had this last Friday only on the Outlook client on Android. Under iOS not yet. I will see Win 11 in a moment. If it occurs there, I'll report here again. Anyone else with this error pattern?

Microsoft's July 2022 support post

As of July 29, 2022, Microsoft has this support post on the issue of Outlook constantly prompting for a password when trying to connect to Microsoft 365 mailbox. The cause Microsoft states there is that this problem can occur if the Network Security at Logon setting on the Security tab of the Microsoft Exchange dialog box is set to a value other than Anonymous Authentication.

But I guess, this has nothing to do with the current issue.

We have had a few users report Outlook (2016/19 client) prompting them to login to 365 this morning. Most have not, and I've not seen the issue myself, although it's quite possible that others have simply logged in again without saying anything, and only the couple who have complicated MFA processes (e.g. to a landline in a different office from where they are working) have got in touch.

  2. Sol says:

We are experiencing the same issue with a lot of our customers.

Feedback from readers on Facebook with a huge install basis: nearly 5 % of the user base was hit – but no clue what's the root cause.

Had the same Problem Today with a Customer

    Delete DWORD key named EnableADAL.

Under the same registry key, Delete DWORD key named DisableADALatopWAMOverride.

    Outlook started without prompting

Rolf, thanks for the advice. Worked for me as I had the same issued and nothing else seemed to work.

    • Emmanuel says:

Thanks! I had the same issue and it works for me. I only had the first registry key EnableADAL. I deleted it and Outlook started to work correctly.

    • Christian says:

Thank you for the solution. Worked fine for me.
Also only had the first key. But after deleting it everything was okay.

    • Marco says:

This was driving me nuts, thanks a lot Rolf!

  6. Bill Haney says:

Thank you, I've spent 2 days off and on looking for a solution. A couple of hours of M$ support, their "solution" was to create a new Windows profile.

  7. Tilmar says:

We also use the German edition of Outlook 2016/365 and had the same problem in 2021 and now again. I agree to Stefan it´s annoying. Could it be related to WSUS/MS 365 updates? Or what about Outlook password caching durations? Unfortunately the credential caching behaviour seems to be a secret of MS. Very frustrating …
