[German]A brief note for owners of a Microsoft Surface Laptop 2. Today, December 27, 2022, Microsoft's support for this device expires. A quick look at what this means for owners of such a device and how long this model was in support.

The Surface Laptop 2 was introduced by Microsoft in October 2018. At the time, I was still reporting on these devices (see my German blog post Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2 und Surface Studio 2). Excerpt from the device description at that time:

Surface Laptop 2 also uses the Intel 8th Gen Quad Core processor with a battery life of up to 14.5 hours. The 13.5-inch PixelSense touch display with ultra-slim bezel offers a good overview and allows for intuitive navigation, OmniSonic speakers provide premium sound. [The] Surface Laptop 2 comes with a price of €1,149 (RRP; incl. VAT) for end customers in Germany. Business customers can purchase [the] Surface Laptop 2 from one of the authorized Surface resellers starting at a price of €1,349 (RRP; incl. VAT).

Personally, I was not particularly interested in these device families because the price was at the upper end, but the repairability was at the lower end of the personal "interest scale". In addition, the Surface models have repeatedly attracted attention due to issues.

Microsoft's update history page of the device always lists firmware and driver updates that last until August 2022.

Surface EOL Dates

Now the folks at neowin.net have noticed that support for this device ends today, December 27, 2022. That's according to this Microsoft page, which lists the EOL dates for the Surface models in question.

I confess, I wasn't that aware of how short Microsoft's supply of firmware and driver updates for the devices is. Just four years of support seems pretty short to me for such an expensive device – especially since Microsoft has had to keep touching up due to problems. I don't know what the stability of the firmware is like now, but the support duration of over 7 years (June 20, 2014 to November 12, 2021) for the Surface Pro 3 is quite a different story.

So that no misunderstandings arise: The Surface Laptop 2 will continue to receive Windows updates. But the supply of firmware and driver updates is history as of today – in fact, the last update is from August 2022. Security and stability updates, if they become necessary, will simply no longer be available.
