[German]Users of Google Chrome browser are facing issues after installing the Windows 11 22H2update KB5027231 from June 13, 2023. The browser suddenly crashes or does not start anymore. There are reports that it may be related to MalwareBytes, which prevents the launch. MalwareBytes has released a fix that disables exploit protection for Chrome. Another problem case is also discussed in Google's Chrome forums, where the suggested solution is "set Chrome as the default browser".

A reader tip
German blog reader Lennart had emailed me a few hours ago about the problems with the Google Chrome browser on Windows 11 22H2 (thanks for that) and wrote:
Hello,
since the last MS updates (patchday) on Tuesday of this week the Google Chrome browser does not start anymore on Windows 11 22H2 Pro.
[The] problem has been discussed in the Google Chrome forums for about 23 hours and different solutions have been shown, since uninstall and reinstall do not change anything.
Recommended Answer: "… we fixed the issue by setting Chrome as the default (browser) and Chrome didn't launch, setting Chrome back to default (browser) fixed the issue."
"Problem fixed by Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Google Chrome, then setting Google Chrome as the default browser"
Could imagine that some of your readers are facing the same problem. M
With kind regards
Lennart
For example, on the fly I found the post Chrome will not launch after latest Windows updates in Google's support forum.
Chrome will not launch after latest Windows updates. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but still will not work. We have rebooted the computers and still nothing. If you are on a basic users profile and run it as an administrator, it will launch. Any suggestions?
User AngelBer's answer, which has been marked as a solution, is:
We had this issue today with two of our users on Windows 11. After an hour or so of troubleshooting, we fixed the issue by setting Chrome as the default browser in Windows. I was able to reproduce by setting other browser as the default and Chrome didn't launch, setting Chrome back to default fixed the issue.
In other replies, the Windows 11 22H2 update KB5027231 (described in my blog post Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (June 13, 2023)) is mentioned as the culprit. Also on reddit.com there is a thread about this problem and someone writes:
Rolled KB5027231 to a bunch of users, and I have Chrome broken everywhere. Attempting to rollback via wusa shows a "catastrophic error" in the Event Viewer, and WSUS shows I cannot roll this back. Yeah, we can manually rollback boxes, and it shows that WILL work, but… no way to back out via command-line?
There, too, it says that setting Google Chrome as the default browser solves the problem. There are other posts on reddit.com, like this one, that address the issue. This thread also links to a post on the MalwareBytes forum that addresses the following issue.

Malwarebytes is also causing issues
I was aware of to blog posts Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Patch Tuesday causes Malwarebytes to block Google Chrome [Update] (neowin.net) and Windows 11 KB5027231 update breaks Google Chrome for Malwarebytes users (Bleeping Computer). Within the MalwareBytes forum there is a thread June 2023 Update (KB5027231) prevents Google Chrome from displaying, where users also discussing the issue.
Updating to June 2023 Update (KB5027231) prevents Google Chrome from displaying after loading. Chrome will be listed in the task manager but you cannot get it to display.
The only thing you can do is quite Malwarebytes.
In this case, the Google Chrome browser hangs when MalwareBytes is used and the mentioned update is installed on Windows 11 22H2. Disabling the "exploit protection" in MalwareBytes should help, according to this post, so that Chrome is displayed again.
From MalwareBytes there is in the meantime the support post Malwarebytes conflict with Google Chrome, which confirms the issue. After installing the June 2023 update KB5027231, there are problems in Windows 11 22H2 in connection with "exploit protection" from MalwareBytes. The manufacturer writes about this:
We have released the temporary fix to resolve the conflict with Chrome and Malwarebytes in Update package version 1.0.70914. This temporary fix is updated automatically for all Windows 11 devices running Malwarebytes and disables anti-exploit protection for Chrome.
MalwareBytes has provided a fix with the update package 1.0.70914. The fix disables the "anti-exploit" protection for Chrome. MalwareBytes is investigating the issue further and will probably release a final fix.
