Firefox 119.0

Firefox 119 is a new development branch, which has the following new features according to the release notes. With Firefox View there are the following innovations:

  • Users can now see all open tabs in all windows. If open tabs are synced, users will also see all tabs from other devices.
  • Browsing history is now listed and can be sorted by date or website. As before, recently closed tabs are also listed in the Firefox view.

Firefox View can be selected via the file folder icon at the top left of the tab. In version 119, Firefox can boast the following additional innovations:

  • Firefox now allows users to edit PDFs by adding images and alt text in addition to text and drawings.
  • Recently closed tabs are now preserved between sessions where automatic session recovery is not enabled. When you manually restore a previous session, any previously opened tabs or windows are reopened.
  • When you migrate your data from Chrome, Firefox now offers the option to import some of your extensions as well.
  • As part of total cookie protection, Firefox now supports partitioning of blob URLs, which mitigates a potential tracking vector that third-party vendors could use to track an individual.
  • The visibility of fonts for websites has been limited to system fonts and fonts from language packs in the strict mode of extended tracking protection to mitigate font fingerprinting.
  • The web standard for the Memory Access API has been updated to improve security while reducing website degradation and enabling the removal of third-party cookies in Firefox.
  • Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) is now available for Firefox users and provides a more private browsing experience. ECH extends the encryption used in TLS connections to cover a larger portion of the handshake and better protect sensitive fields. Read more about the launch of ECH on Mozilla Distilled.
  • Media sniffing is no longer applied to files that are provided as type application/octet-stream. This allows these files to be downloaded instead of trying to play them.
  • On Windows, the mouse pointer disappears during typing if the appropriate Windows Mouse Properties system setting is enabled.

In addition, Firefox is now available in the Santali (sat) language. The developers have fixed an issue that caused unexpected jumps in the scrolling position on Facebook. Several vulnerabilities rated as High have been closed in Firefox 119 (see here).

Notes for Enterprise users are available here. Firefox should update automatically, but can be downloaded from this website for various platforms (choose the variant from the list boxes shown).

Firefox 115.4 ESR

This is a maintenance update for Firefox. According to the release notes, Firefox 115.3 ESR0 fixed the vulnerabilities described here.
