Windows: Three more features are declared as deprecated in Nov. 2023

Windows[English]As of November 3, 2023, Microsoft has once again declared three features from Windows as "deprecated" (neowin has noticed this). This means that these functions will no longer be developed and will eventually be removed from Windows 11 (or its successor). In addition to the computer browser driver and service, the WebDAV client and service will probably mean something to some users.

Microsoft has embellished the announcements from the beginning of September 2023 on this website with a few more details. Here is the compilation:

  • Computer Browser: The "Computer Browser" driver and service are outdated and based on an outdated and insecure device localization protocol. This protocol, service and driver were first disabled by default in Windows 10 with the removal of the SMB1 service. For more information on Computer Browser, see MS-BRWS Common Internet File System.
  • Webclient (WebDAV) Service: The Webclient (WebDAV) service is obsolete and is not started by default anyway. More information can be found under WebDAV – Win32 apps.
  • Remote Mailslots: The Remote Mailslot protocol is an outdated, simple, unreliable and insecure IPC method that was first introduced in MS DOS. This protocol was first disabled by default in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. You can find more information about remote mailslots at About Mailslots and [MS-MAIL]: Remote Mailslot Protocol.

Microsoft's website also contains a note from October 2023 that VBScript has been discontinued and is considered obsolete. In future versions of Windows, VBScript will be available as a feature on demand before it is removed from the operating system at some point. For more information, see Resources for deprecated features. WordPad was also deprecated at this time (see my post here).
