[German]On May 14, 2024 (second Tuesday of the month, patch day at Microsoft), various cumulative updates were released for the supported Windows 10 builds (from the RTM version to the current version) as well as for the Windows Server counterparts. Here are some details on the respective security updates for Windows 10, with the KB5037765 update for Server 2019 failing with error code 0x800f0982.

Since March 2021, Microsoft has been integrating the Servicing Stack Updates (SSUs) for newer Windows 10 builds into the cumulative update. March 2023 was the last time preview updates were available for older Windows 10 builds.
Updates for Windows 10 Version 21H1-22H2
For the Windows 10 versions mentioned above, Microsoft only provides one update package, which is named below.
Update KB5037768 for Windows 10 Version 21H1 – 22H2
Cumulative Update KB5037768 raises the OS build for all Windows 10 variants to 1904x.4412 – with 21H2, only the Enterprise variant will receive the update. The update only contains security fixes, but no new operating system functions. The cumulative update simply states:
- This update addresses a known issue that might cause your VPN connection to fail. This occurs after you install the update dated April 9, 2024, or later.
- This update addresses an issue that might affect domain controllers (DC). NTLM authentication traffic might increase.
- This update addresses an issue that might affect Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) scenarios. They might fail. These scenarios include VPN, Windows Hello, Credential Guard, and Key Guard.
The issues from the articles Windows 10/11/Server: VPN connections broken after April 2024 updates and Windows Server: April 2024 updates causes NTLM traffic issues might be fixed. Microsoft also points out that this update makes quality improvements to the Servicing Stack (responsible for Microsoft updates). This update is automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update, but is also available in the Microsoft Update Catalog and via WSUS and WUfB. Updates for Windows 10/Server 2019
The following updates are available for Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC and Windows Server 2019.
Update KB5037765 for Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC /Windows Server 2019
Cumulative Update KB5037765 (is sorted under Windows 10 v1809, but refers to the 2019 versions and) and includes quality improvements but no new operating system features. This update is only available for Windows 10 2019 Enterprise LTSC and IoT Enterprise LTSC (the remaining versions will no longer receive security updates on May 11, 2021) and Windows Server 2019. Microsoft lists a number of fixes.

- This update addresses an issue in that affects IE mode. It stops responding. This occurs if you press the left arrow key when an empty text box has focus and caret browsing is on.
- This update addresses a known issue that might cause your VPN connection to fail. This occurs after you install the update dated April 9, 2024, or later.
In addition, the support article KB5037765 describes an adjustment to the validation of the next secure data set 3 (NSEC3) in a recursive resolver, the limit of which was set to 1,000. Furthermore, the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file DriverSiPolicy.p7b has been updated.
This update fixes a problem that affects Active Directory. Binding requests to IPv6 addresses fail. This occurs when the requester is not joined to a domain.

Microsoft has also updated the Service Stack Update (SSU). Windows Server 2019: Update KB5037765 fails with Error 0x800f0982
A couple of German blog readers reported an install error 0x800f0982 for update KB5037765. Nils S. contacted me by email and wrote that the first errors are already occurring with the Windows updates for Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2016. The cumulative update KB5037765 for Windows Server 2019 (1809) fails with the installation error 0x800f0982. The entry can be found in the event log:
The status of package KB5037765 could not be changed to "Installed". Status: 0x800f0982.
The detection and repair of system memory errors is initiated. Detection only: 0, automatically triggered: 1.
This is not an isolated error, blog reader Dieter K. also wrote that he received the installation error 0x800f0982 when updating KB5037765. He was able to observe this on seven Windows Server 2019 systems at seven different customers. Here is the error in the process:
- Update KB5038283 hangs at 0%
- then wait and reboot after 1.5 hours
- Server stops at "Windows is being prepared …."
- switch off; then the server starts up again

Updates for Windows 10 Version 1507 and 1607
Updates for the Enterprise LTSC versions are available for Windows 10 RTM up to version 1607. These updates are automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update, but are available for download in the Microsoft Update Catalog (search for the KB number). The latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) must be installed before manual installation. Details can be found in the respective KB article.
- Windows 10 Version 1607: Update KB5037763 is only available for Enterprise LTSC and Windows Server 2016. The update addresses security issues and other problems (e.g. VPN problem).
- Windows 10 Version 1507: Update KB5037788 is available for the RTM version (LTSC). The update fixes vulnerabilities and bugs.
There was no update for the remaining Windows 10 versions, as these versions have fallen out of support. If in doubt, details on the above updates can be found in the respective Microsoft KB articles.
