Windows 11 23H2/22H2: Preview Update KB5041587 (August 27, 2024)

Windows[German]Microsoft has released the optional cumulative (preview) update KB5041587 for Windows 11 version 22H2 and 23H2 on August 27, 2024. This is an optional update whose fixes will be generally rolled out in the following month. For Windows 11 22H2, only the Education and Enterprise versions will receive the update. A new feature is a share function with Android, which will be rolled out in stages.

Please note that this update is a so-called preview update. This is optional and must be initiated manually for download and installation by default (although Windows 11 22H2 contains options for automatic installation). The update contains the fixes that will be rolled out in the security update for the following month. The list of updates for Windows 11 can be viewed on this Microsoft page.

Preview update KB5041587 for Windows 11 22H2-23H2

The preview update KB5041587 has been released for Windows 11 version 22H2-23H2 and provides new features and fixes for this Windows version. Microsoft refers to this update as a gradual rollout with new features.

  • The "Windows Share" function is highlighted as an innovation. Users will be able to share content with an Android device via the window of the same name. This requires the Android device to be paired with the Windows PC via the Android Link to Windows app and the Windows Phone Link application.
  • With the screen reader (Narrator), the scan mode should react faster, which should help with Microsoft Edge when reading large documents. To use the scanner mode, switch on the Narrator (Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter) and then call up the scan mode during the Narrator session by pressing the Caps Lock key + space bar.
  • Furthermore, Voice access highlights that speakers can now dictate the characters they are spelling at a faster speed. There are also more editing options for the select, delete and move commands within text.

For File Explorer (Windows Explorer), Microsoft promises a whole series of fixes, such as a focus problem with the screen reader, or a search that does not start when Ctrl+F is pressed. The bug where the keyboard focus is sometimes lost when pressing Shift + Tab is also supposed to be fixed. It's amazing to me how many (other) bugs Microsoft claims to have fixed in this area of Explorer. This is a sign that Microsoft's development team has really screwed up the file manager that has been part of Windows for over 30 years. Functions and gimmicks are built in that are probably only used by a marginal number of people, but the user community is then left to deal with bugs for months on end.

Microsoft also writes that an update for the Widgets Board will be introduced to improve security and APIs for the creation of widgets and feeds for users in the European Economic Union (EEA regions = EU + Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein, but excluding Switzerland). As part of this update, the Microsoft Start Experiences app will support Microsoft Start widgets and feeds.

I haven't covered this topic here on the blog, but Microsoft has been working on the Start menu and widgets for some time now. In this context, only the neowin.net article Microsoft is bringing annoying Windows 11 Start menu ads to Windows 10 from August 24, 2024 pops up in the back of my head, which addresses a backport of an annoying feature.

The support article for the update lists further quality improvements and fixes for a normal rollout. For example, BlueTooth connection problems are addressed once again, and a bug when exiting hibernation mode, which causes notebooks to stop responding, is said to have been fixed. The same applies to a bug in Windows Hello for Business with regard to resetting the PIN, which previously did not work correctly. A refresh problem in the navigation area of Windows Explorer is also said to have been fixed. Two further corrections affect business users and their administrators who are struggling with the following bugs:

  • [Unified Write Filter (UWF) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)] An SCCM task to reactivate UWF fails due to a block in UWF. This prevents the device from restarting when you expect it to.
  • [Microsoft Entra Single Sign-On (SSO)] The SSO hint, which is required for the European Digital Markets Act (DMA), is displayed too often. This occurs when you authenticate with a certificate. For more information, see Upcoming changes to Windows Single Sign-On.

The details can be found in the support article linked above. The long list of new features and fixes will be integrated into the security update for the following month. The preview update is optional and is offered if the user explicitly selects optional updates for installation on the settings page. If the option to install optional updates is activated, Windows 11 can also install the update automatically.

The update is offered via Windows Update, but can also be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) is integrated to fix various issues. Further details, e.g. on the installation requirements, can be found in the support article if in doubt. Problems, if known, are also listed there.
