[German]After installing the Windows security updates from August 13, 2024 GPP "Item-Level Targeting" was broken. It was no longer possible to select groups. Microsoft has now fixed this bug as of September 11, 2024 with the security updates for Windows. Here is some information about what it is and feedback from readers that the bug has been fixed.

"Item-level targeting" bug in GPP
Group Policy Preferences (GPP) were introduced with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista and are a collection of client-side Group Policy Extensions (GPO). These provide preference settings for domain-joined computers running Microsoft Windows desktop and server operating systems.
The installation of the security updates from the August 2024 patchday (August 13, 2024) under Windows (clients and servers) resulted in the "Item-Level Targeting" (GPP target group addressing) no longer working afterwards. The screenshot above, sent to me by blog reader Michael, illustrates the bug. In the target group addressing editor, the Users in group option can no longer be selected for installed August 2024 updates. Affected were at least:
- Windows Server 2019: Update KB5041578
- Windows Server 2022: Update KB5041160
I had reported on this issue in the blog post Windows August 2024 updates breaks new Item-Level Targeting in GPOs, and the bug was reported by several readers as well as on the Internet by other affected persons. Mark Heitbrink had posted several workarounds in this German comment to be able to select the users after all.
September 2024 updates fix the problem
In this German comment German blog reader Stef asked "Has the problem with the GPOs on AD servers been fixed (target group addressing not possible)?". Mark Heitbrink and Martin already confirm in the follow-up comments that the bug has been fixed. Martin wrote:

At the same time, several administrators have responded to my German blog post Microsoft Security Update Summary (10. September 2024) and confirmed that the problem with item-level targeting has been fixed. Ralf wrote here:
It looks like Microsoft has fixed the problem with item-level targeting. After yesterday's patchday, "User in Group" is no longer grayed out and can be selected again.
Ralf has installed the update KB5042881 for Windows Server 2022 (see PPatchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (September 10, 2024)) and used the update KB5043050 for Windows Server 2019 (see Patchday: Windows 10/Server Updates (September 10, 2024)). In further comments on the article Microsoft Security Update Summary (September 10, 2024), other administrators also confirm that the problem with the September 2024 updates has been resolved.
