[German]Strange story – there are currently an increasing number of reports from users who claim to have received an Edge update before the weekend. After that, folder icons of the favorites are displayed transparently. I did some research after I came across the information on the patch management list on Sunday.

First report on patchmanagement.org
I received the information about an inconsistency in Windows 11 24H2 in connection with the Edge browser yesterday, December 22, 2024, via the patchmanagement.org mailing list.
Susan Bradley asks if anyone has noticed that the favorites folder icons have suddenly become transparent after an Edge update the last few days. She already referred to a post Topic: Edge Year in Review Update leave folders transparent instead of yellow in the Askwoody.com forum on December 21, 2024.
Normally, the folder icons of the favorites in Edge are displayed with a yellow background. However, since an update, one user has noticed that the icons are now transparent.

This then looks like shown in the picture above. The user asks whether others are also seeing this and whether Microsoft will fix it. Susan Bradley suspects that a recent update for the Edge browser is responsible for this behavior. The thread links to this Microsoft page, where the latest Edge version 131.0.2903.99 is mentioned in the URL. In the thread, Windows 10 users also report being affected.
Confirmation on Patchmanagement.org
On Patchmanagement.org, a user then also reported a confirmation. He has a system with Windows 11 24H2, which was switched off for a few days. When he booted up the system, he observed the following:
- Edge was updated to version 131.0.2903.112 (official version) shortly after it was switched on (64-bit)
- The configured "appearance" of Edge is configured as "System Default".
After installing the Edge update, the favorites folders are now white (the reported transparent appearance). The URLs in the subfolders retain their icon cache shapes and colors. Changing the Edge appearance to light or dark (dark mode) does not change anything.
Interesting to note that it's pretty much the same as Chrome (where there are white folders, URLs that retain cache icons and colors). The user can't remember me when or if they ever showed "yellow colored" in Chrome on this Windows 11 24H2 system.
Exactly the same (white, transparent appearance) is also displayed on the system in the latest Firefox 133.0.3 (with the exe or msi installation). In the SeaMonkey browser, the folders are displayed in gray.
More posts on the Internet
I then came across the post Edge folders in favourites now transparent / white – where's the yellow gone? from 21. Dec. 2024 on reddit.com, where someone complained about the same thing. I didn't find a solution there either.
Another reddit.com post Invisible folder icons – how can we bring back yellow icons? addresses the same effect and curses about the "minimalism" virus that is now also spreading in Edge. All his folder icons have become transparent due to this new bug. As a result, he can no longer see them properly as they blend in with the background. According to the person affected, it no longer even makes sense that they are not yellow. Folders have always been yellow, and they are yellow everywhere else in Windows.
Addendum: Just found this article, where Windows Lastest also addressed this behavior.
