[German]The cumulative updates published by Microsoft on December 10, 2024 appear to be causing problems for some Windows 11 users. There is talk of the Start menu no longer responding and other problems. There does not yet seem to be a remedy – and there will be no preview updates for December 2024.

Windows 11 December 2024 Updates
Microsoft has released cumulative updates for Windows 11 22H2 to 24H2 on December 10, 2024 (second Tuesday of the month, patch day at Microsoft). Cumulative update KB5048667 for Windows 11 24H2 and cumulative update KB5048685 for Windows 11 23H2 are intended to make various security improvements to the operating systems.
Start menu issues
In the blog post Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5048667 causes problems, I pointed out installation and performance issues. In this article, Windows Latest reports further Start menu problems with the KB5048667 update for Windows 11 24H2 and the KB5048685 update for Windows 11 23H2.
According to reports available to Windows Latest, the Windows 11 December 2024 Update causes the Start menu to stop working. The medium writes that there are two different problems related to the Start menu.
Dark Windows themes broken
There should be a post in the Feedback Hub with the title "KB5048667 breaking Start Menu's search theme". After installing the December 2024 patch for Windows 11 24H2, a user noticed that when using a dark Windows theme, the search in the Start menu is displayed mainly in white.
However, this is largely a cosmetic story – and cosmetics are kind of overrated. It should be clear to any Windows 11 user that this is not a beauty event, as the OS shows "its ugly side" time and time again.

Start menu no longer responds in VDI
More problematic, however, is that the Start menu no longer works in some cases in VDI environments after installing update KB5048667 in Windows 11 24H2 or update KB5048685 in Windows 11 23H.
Citrix has published the support document Start menu may stop responding if KB5048685 installed on Windows 11 22H2/23H2 VDA, which confirms that there are problems with the Start menu, which may no longer respond.
Citrix is investigating this issue and is currently proposing a simple workaround. In the registry, navigate to the following key.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CtxUvi
The REG_SZ value UviProcessExcludes must be created there and filled with the content 'StartMenuExper;'. After rebooting Windows, the Start menu should work again.
No preview updates in December 2024
Microsoft already announced on Patchday that there would be no preview updates for Windows in December 2024 due to the holidays. In the meantime, there is the following tweet from the Windows team wishing you happy holidays during the update break.
