Windows 11 24H2: No update installation in some cases

Windows[German]Pretty silly story affecting users of Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft has confirmed that the installation of the operating system may not be able to install new security updates. It affects installations made with media from October and November 2024. Microsoft also mentions a workaround to avoid the problem.

Microsoft confirms a problem

It'is simply a "wonderful Christmas present" that Microsoft presented to its Windows 11 24H2 users on December 24, 2024. In the Windows 11 Release Health Dashboard for version 24H2, there has been a new entry Issues might occur with media which installs the October or November update in the Known Issues section since December 24, 2024.

Microsoft writes that when using installation media for Windows 11, version 24H2, the device may remain in a state in which it will not accept any further Windows security updates. In other words, the user has freshly installed Windows 11 24H2 and discovers in the following month that the cumulative security updates for Patchday cannot be installed.

This occurs if the media with the installation images was created to contain the security updates from October 2024 or November 2024. These updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024.

So if you have created an installation medium on a USB stick and installed Windows 11 24H2 with it, you now have a problem. If the above-mentioned updates KB5044284 (October 8), KB5044384 (October 24) and KB5046617 (November 12) were already included in the installation image, the system will not receive any further updates.

Windows 11 24H2 systems that were set up with the initial release of the installation medium and subsequently obtained and installed the above-mentioned updates via Windows Update are not affected. The same applies if the updates were downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog and then installed manually.

Microsoft is investigating the problem and intends to provide a solution for the affected systems in the future. What this solution will look like is currently unclear.

Microsoft proposes a "workaround"

To avoid problems, Microsoft gives profound advice: Do not install Windows 11, version 24H2, which includes the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. Instead, users should ensure that the media used to install Windows 11, version 24H2, contains the December 2024 monthly security update (released on December 10, 2024) or later.
