Windows 11: March 2025 updates cause issues with RDP connections

Windows[German]I'm dragging a separate topic here into a blog post that Microsoft has brought to administrators and users with the March 2025 patchday. I have received reports that the KB5053598 update is causing problems with RDP connections. These RDP connections are terminated after a short time. I posted this in the German blog a few days ago and received further confirmations.

Windows 11 Updates March 2025

On March 11, 2025, cumulative updates were rolled out for Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 11 24H2, which are also intended to make improvements to the operating systems. The updates are described in the article Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (March 11, 2025).

Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5053598

Cumulative Update KB5053598 March 11, 2025 for Windows 11 24H2 includes quality improvements and security patches (see Microsoft Security Update Summary (March 11, 2025)).

However, the list of quality improvements can be found in the preview update KB5052093 from February 25, 2025, which fixes a problem in Open Secure Shell (OpenSSH) and a bug in Hyper-V. Certain previous RDP display issues (see also my blog post Windows 11: Still RDP issues (Feb. 2025)?) are also said to have been fixed – which is also mentioned in this German user comment.

Windows 11 23H2: Update KB5053602

Also cumulative update KB5053602 with quality improvements and security patches (see Microsoft Security Update Summary (March 11, 2025)) has also been rolled out for Windows 11 22H2-23H2.

New RDP issues after March 2025 update

However, it now looks like the attempt to fix the RDP display issues through cumulative updates from March 11, 2025 for Windows 11 is leading to other problems. There are already several comments describing new issues with RDP connections on the article Windows 11: Still RDP issues (Feb. 2025)?

Robert states on February 25, 2025 that access to Windows 11 24H2 clients from Windows 10 with RDP is impossible. Sometimes there is only a black screen, sometimes only the lock screen appears without any reaction, sometimes he makes it to the "Welcome" message. After that, however, nothing happens. In this scenario, the GPO setting described in this article helps.

Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Connections

Select the network detection on the server and set it to activated. The detection of the connection time and the continuous network detection must be deactivated. But that's old stuff, what's in March 2025?

RDP issues in Windows 11 24H2

However, it now looks like the attempt to fix the RDP display issues with the March 11, 2025 cumulative update KB5053598 for Windows 11 24H2 has led to a different problem.

In this German comment, an administrator writes that since installing the KB5053598 update, their users have experienced the phenomenon that RDP connections are disconnected after approx. 2 minutes when the RDP connection is dropped to the taskbar.

Also in this German comment, a user reports that the RDP issue occurs under Windows Server 2016 with update KB5053598 installed. On Windows 11 24H2 clients with installed update KB5053598 "RemoteApps looses connections in a time between 2 and 10 minutes". The error message is meaningless, an update uninstallation brings improvement. The reader also mentions that deactivating UDP for the accessing clients with the update installed also seems to work.

Also RDP issues in Windows 11 23H2

As a third German blog reader, Luigiano reports in this comment that Windows 11 23H2 clients are also experiencing RDP issues after installing the March 2025 update KB5053602 in question. When accessing Windows Terminal Server 2016 and 2025 via RDP, the RDP connection terminates when a Windows pop-up notification is received. The RDP connection only works after switching to sleep mode. Uninstalling the Windows 11 updates solves the problem, writes the reader.

Further sources on the Internet

While searching the Internet, I found this entry in the Spiceworks community, which reports interruptions in the remote desktop connection on Windows 11 24H2 clients.

The above screenshot was posted in the thread. Windows Latest also mentions RDP connection drops in this post.

"The RDP connection only works after switching to sleep mode."
What does this mean? It makes no sense to me.
