Windows RDP issues confirmed by Microsoft's January 2025 update

Windows[German]Users of Windows 11 24H2 have been struggling with RDP problems for months. Connections break off or cannot be established. Microsoft has now confirmed these problems, which I addressed in a blog post. The preview update from January 2025 is said to be responsible for the problems, and the preview update from March 2025 brings a fix.

Reports about RDP problems

I had addressed the RDP issues in connection with Windows 11 in the blog post Windows 11: Still RDP issues (Feb. 2025)? and also addressed the topic again in March 2025 in the post Windows 11: March 2025 updates cause issues with RDP connections. Users complained that access to Windows 11 24H2 clients with RDP was impossible. Microsoft did write that the March 2025 updates also fixed RDP problems. But this probably did not apply to all problems.

Microsoft confirms RDP problems

As of March 27, 2025, Microsoft has posted the support article Remote Desktop might disconnect with January 2025 preview updates and late in the Known Issues of the Windows 11 24H2 Health Dashboard.

It states that after installing the January 2025 Windows Preview Update (KB5050094) and later updates, users may experience disconnections during Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions, including Remote Desktop Services (RDS). Microsoft writes that after the release of the March 2025 Windows security update (KB5053598), a significant increase in reports of this issue has been observed.

According to Microsoft, users may notice that their RDP sessions are unexpectedly disconnected after 65 seconds when making UDP-based connections from Windows 11, version 24H2 devices to RDS deployments running Windows Server 2016 or earlier. As a result of this issue, users may experience frequent interruptions to their Remote Desktop and RDS sessions.

According to Microsoft, Windows Server 2025 itself is not affected as an RDS host, but you may experience disconnections when connecting to older servers as an RDP client.

This issue has been fixed by Windows updates released on March 27, 2025 (Preview Update KB5053656 and later. Administrators who do not want to install the updates yet can perform a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) via Group Policy. The required .msi files with the group policies can be retrieved via the support article.

According to the support article Remote Desktop might freeze after installing the January 2025 preview update from March 25, 2025, the problem was also fixed by update KB5052093 (February 2025 Preview), but this is not really confirmed by my blog post Windows 11: March 2025 updates cause issues with RDP connections.
