Windows 11 24H2/Server 2025: Microsoft fixes remote desktop freezes caused by Feb. 2025 update

Windows[German]Users of Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 have been plagued by problems with remote desktop connections for months. Microsoft has now announced that it has at least fixed the freezing of remote desktop connections as a result of the February 2025 security update for these operating systems.

Remote desktop connections as a problem

Reports of RDP problems under Windows are "almost a daily occurrence" here on the blog. In January 2025, a security update for Windows 11 24H2 caused remote desktop connection problems. Connections break off or cannot be established.

I had addressed the issue of RDP problems in connection with Windows 11 in the blog post Windows 11: Still RDP issues (Feb. 2025)? and also addressed the issue again in March 2025 in the post Windows 11: March 2025 updates cause issues with RDP connections. Users complained that access to Windows 11 24H2 clients with RDP was impossible.

Microsoft wrote that the March 2025 updates also fixed RDP problems. But this probably did not apply to all problems. As of March 27, 2025, Microsoft has confirmed RDP problems in the Known Issues of the Windows 11 24H2 Health Dashboard in the support article Remote Desktop might disconnect with January 2025 preview updates and later. These are said to have been caused by the Windows preview update from January 2025 (KB5050094) and later updates.

According to the support article Remote Desktop might freeze after installing the January 2025 preview update from March 25, 2025, the problem was also fixed by update KB5052093 (February 2025 preview) (see also Windows RDP issues confirmed by Microsoft's January 2025 update), but this is not really confirmed by my blog post Windows 11: March 2025 updates cause issues with RDP connections.

Microsoft claims to have fixed RDP freezes

Yesterday I saw the support post Remote Desktop might freeze after installing the February 2025 update from April 22, 2025 in the Windows Release Health Dashbord of Windows Server 2025. Microsoft confirms that RDP issues may occur after installing the February 11, 2025 security update (KB5051987) and subsequent updates on Windows Server 2025 devices.

The symptom is that remote desktop sessions freeze shortly after the connection is established. If this problem occurs, mouse and keyboard inputs within the session no longer respond. Users can only disconnect and reconnect. In addition to Windows Server 2025, clients with Windows 11 24H2 are also affected.

This problem was fixed with the security update KB5055523 from April 8, 2025 for Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft recommends installing the latest update for the devices as it contains important improvements and fixes, including the RDP issue outlined above. (via)
