Windows 11 24H2: June 2025 Preview Update KB5060829 triggers Firewall Events

Windows[German]Microsoft released the preview update KB5060829 for Windows 11 24H2 on June 26, 2025. The update corrects errors, but causes trouble. For example, administrators suddenly find entries triggered by the Windows Firewall for Advanced Security in the Windows Event Viewer. Microsoft now states that these entries can be ignored.

Windows 11 24H2 Update KB5060829

The preview update KB5060829 released on June 26, 2025 for Windows 11 version 24H2 contains improvements and fixes. Some (such as the AI function) will be rolled out gradually (not available for all users), others will be rolled out normally for all users. I reported on this in the blog post Windows 10/11: Preview Updates June 2025.

The preview update KB5060829 is intended to fix the print-to-PDF problem described in the blog post Windows 11 24H2 June 2025 update issues: KB5060842 with wrong timestamp and Print to PDF, which is caused by an April 2025 update. But there are also new problems with the update. I pointed out problems with the Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) client in the article Windows 11 24H2: Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) App Attach fails. But there is another error.

Firewall entries in the Event Viewer

In the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard, the support article Error events are logged for Windows Firewall has been available since July 2, 2025. This indicates a problem caused by the preview update KB5060829. After installing the update, there may be error entries in the Event Viewer in the Windows Events – Security category, caused by Windows Firewall with Advanced Security..

The error is displayed in the Event Viewer as event 2042 for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. The event appears as "Config Read Failed" with the message "More data is available". The event is logged in the Event Viewer each time the device is restarted.

Microsoft writes that the event does not reflect a problem with the Windows Firewall and can therefore be ignored without hesitation. Windows Firewall should function normally and no action is required by the administrator to prevent or resolve this error event.

Microsoft explains that this event is related to a feature that is currently under development and not yet fully implemented. There is no impact on Windows processes associated with this event. Sounds a bit like "banana software" that is shipped to the customer and is supposed to mature. The developers are working on a solution and will provide an update in one of the next versions.
