Windows 11 24H2: Easy Anti Cheat Show Stopper lifted

Windows[German]Something is happening: Microsoft has removed a showstopper on July 24, 2025, which had already been set on September 30, 2024, long before the launch of Windows 11 24H2. It concerns Easy Anti-Cheat, a technology used in games, which previously prevented an upgrade to Windows 11 24H2.

This week, I read in this article on neowin.net that Microsoft has classified Windows 11 24H2 as the most reliable version of Windows to date. This is based on the Microsoft Tech Community post  Resilience in action for Windows devices, which lists all the new features of Windows 11 24H2. Among other things, it mentioned "Quick Machine Recovery, which triggered some thoughts (I never had the necessity to such a feature on Linux). I didn't mention this particular news here in the blog because I wanted let users their own opinions. But now there's a show-stopper lifted, which I like to report.

The problem with Easy Anti-Cheat

BDuring testing of the Windows Insider Previews, Microsoft had already discovered that some devices using Easy Anti-Cheat could become unresponsive and trigger a blue screen when upgrading to Windows 11 24H2. The cause was older driver versions of the Easy Anti-Cheat application that are not compatible with Windows 11, version 24H2. I mentioned this in October 2024 in the article Windows 11 24H2: Numerous show-stoppers and known bugs and referred to the details published by Microsoft in the support article Some devices using Easy Anti-Cheat stop responding and receive a blue screen.

Easy Anti-Cheat Show Stopper resolved

On July 24, 2025, Microsoft published a support article titled Some devices using Easy Anti-Cheat stop responding and receive a blue screen on the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Status page. The article states that the issue with Easy Anti Cheat has been resolved.

Microsoft has lifted the upgrade block on Windows 11 24H2 for machines on which an Easy Anti-Cheat driver is found. Compatible devices that are eligible for upgrade and on which a feature upgrade has not been blocked will therefore be offered Windows 11 version 24H2 for installation via Windows Update.

However, a warning may be displayed on the devices before the upgrade, indicating that an incompatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat is installed on the device. However, there is also a note that it is possible to update the Easy Anti-Cheat driver to a compatible version by starting and updating frequently played games. The user must then confirm the upgrade installation of Windows 11 24H2.

The availability of Easy Anti-Cheat updates depends on the game manufacturers. Microsoft also states that the upgrade blocker is also lifted if older versions of Easy Anti-Cheat are still present on a device. However, if a game with an older version of Easy Anti-Cheat is launched on a device, freezes or blue screens may occur until the driver is updated by the game manufacturer.
