[German]On August 19, 2025, Microsoft released the previously announced out-of-band updates for Windows 10 (KB5066188) and Windows 11 (KB5066189). These updates replace the regular updates from August 12, 2025, and are intended to resolve the reported issue with the broken restore and recovery.
The problem with the August 2025 update
Microsoft released on August 12, 2025 various cumulative security updates for Windows clients and servers, which I described in the articles PPatchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (August 12, 2025) and Patchday: Windows Server Updates (August 12, 2025).
However, various Windows clients encountered the problem that the functions for resetting and repairing Windows (Reset and Recovery) no longer worked under Windows 10 and Windows 11. I reported the details in the blog post August 2025 Patch Day Review: Upgrade Error 0x8007007F; Reset/Recovery Brokenand also listed all affected Windows client versions. Microsoft had announced out-of-band updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Out-of-band updates for Windows 10/11
German blog readers have already pointed out in comments (here and here) that Microsoft released out-of-band updates for Windows 10 (KB5066188) and Windows 11 (KB5066189) on August 19, 2025 (thanks for that). On August 19, 2025, Microsoft published the support articleReset and recovery operations on some Windows versions might fail on the Windows Update Release Health page and marked the issue as "resolved."
It is said that the described problem has been resolved with the out-of-band (OOB) updates KB5066189 (Windows 11 22H2 – 23H2) and KB5066188 (Windows 10 21H2 (LTBS) and 22H2). Microsoft recommends installing these updates instead of the regular updates.
Fritz writes here that an out-of-band update KB5066187 has also been released for Windows Server 2019 (and Windows 10 2019 (IoT) Enterprise LTSC). The previous updates are marked as "superseded" in WSUS. Bolko notes here that the new updates re-enable telemetry.

This page starts off in English, but after the first paragraph, only the headings are in English and the text body is in German.
thx, was in a rush to the doctor – and I'm now in an mergency room, will have a look and a fix later, need to rest a bit and hope the ice pack helps. Blogging is dangerus, no joke.
Addendum: I'm back, the whole text is now in English. Sorry for unconvinience. Background information: It's unbelievable and probably something that would only happen to me: I twisted my ankle while blogging and suffered a painful ligament injury to my ankle joint. So I spend the half day in an emergeny room for x-ray and first diagnosis – some more diagnosis is required. Shit happens.
Stay healthy and thank you so much for you blog! You are a star for me. All the love from Sweden.
Thx, it seems, that I'm grounded for ~6 weeks (before I may start again with sports, walking etc.). Will continue to run this blog and my German IT blog on "an emergency base with minimal, but continous activity" – thanks to my (Linux) notebooks I can blog from an armchair in my living room, with an orthosis on my ancle ;-).
Get well soon. Thank you very much for all the information you pass along
