[German]Brief update from the end of last week. Microsoft has announced that it has finally fixed a camera bug (existing since 2024) that caused apps to freeze. However, after installing the August 2025 Preview Update (and subsequent updates), some apps will no longer be able to display or record live TV or play content protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM).
DRM problem with media playback
With the release of the August 2025 Preview Update KB5064081 (and subsequent updates), a problem has crept into Windows 11 24H2 that affects the handling of DRM-protected media (live TV, recordings, etc.). On September 19, 2025, Microsoft published the article roblems playing protected content in some BluRay/DVD/Digital TV applications in the Known Issues section of the Windows Release Health Dashboard for Windows 11 24H2.
After installing the Windows Preview Update from August 29, 2025 (KB5064081) or later updates, problems may occur when playing protected content in some digital TV and BluRay/DVD applications. This affects applications that use Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or Digital Rights Management (DRM) for digital audio data. These applications may experience copy protection errors, frequent playback interruptions, freezing, or black screens. This issue does not affect streaming services.
Microsoft developers are working on this issue and plan to provide solutions in future Windows updates. Details will be available in due course.
Camera freeze bug finally fixed
In mid-October 2024, I reported in the blog post Windows 11 24H2: Apps no longer respond when using the camera reported a bug in Windows 11 24H2 that causes apps to freeze when using the camera. According to Microsoft, this affects scenarios in which facial recognition or object detection features are enabled. This can include using the camera app, using facial recognition login options with Windows Hello, and other applications that use the built-in camera.
Redmond had set a compatibility lock for affected devices so that they could not be updated to Windows 11 24H2. Now, Windows 11 23H2 (Home and Pro) will reach end of support on November 11, 2025. At the eleventh hour, so to speak, and after almost a year of waiting, Microsoft has now deigned to fix the above bug.
Microsoft has published the support article Camera use might cause some applications to become unresponsive in the Windows Release Health Dashboard for Windows 11 24H2 as of September 19, 2025. There, you can learn that Microsoft had already lifted the upgrade block for affected systems (running Windows 11 23H2) on September 11, 2025 (shortly after the September 2025 patch day).
Affected devices that are eligible for upgrade and are not subject to any other restrictions should now be updated to Windows 11 version 24H2 via Windows Update. The 48 hours it can take for the update to Windows 11, version 24H2, to be offered should have passed. Restarting the device may help speed up the upgrade process.
