[German]Windows systems that had the SenseShield driver sprotect.sys installed could not previously run Windows 11 24H2—they experienced blue screens and crashes. The problem has now been solved, and Microsoft has lifted the upgrade blocker for Windows 11 24H2 that was related to SenseShield technology.
SenseShield driver as upgrade stopper
At the beginning of April 2025, I reported on the problem in the blog post Windows 11 24H2: Upgrade Stopper SenseShield Technology. At that time, Microsoft published the post Devices with apps using sprotect.sys driver might stop responding in the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard on April 4, 2025. It states that there is a compatibility issue with SenseShield Technology Co and its sprotect.sys driver under Windows 11 version 24H2.
This problem causes affected devices to stop responding and display a blue or black screen error.
The sprotect.sys driver provides encryption protection and is used by specialized security software and enterprise solutions. This driver can be automatically introduced into a system as part of the installation process for many different applications.
The issue affected devices running any version of the sprotect.sys driver (1.0.2.372 and 1.0.3.48903).
Microsoft lifts upgrade block
On October 16, 2025, Microsoft set the entry Devices with apps using sprotect.sys driver might stop responding to "Resolved" status in the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard. Microsoft, in collaboration with SenseShield Technology Co, has successfully resolved the compatibility issue between Windows 11, version 24H2, and the sprotect.sys driver.
Current versions of the software that use the sprotect.sys driver contain a driver version that fixes the compatibility issue. The only problem is determining whether the applications that use SenseShield technology automatically include the compatible version of the sprotect.sys driver or install the updated driver. Therefore, it can be difficult to determine which update is required. If an application that uses sprotect.sys crashes under Windows 11 24H2 and displays the above symptoms, the problem can be resolved by updating to a newer version of this software.
In any case, Microsoft has lifted the upgrade blocker for this issue as of October 15, 2025. Eligible devices without other compatibility restrictions can now be updated to Windows 11 version 24H2 via Windows Update. However, it may take up to 48 hours for the update to Windows 11, version 24H2, to be offered (which should be the case by now). Restarting your device may help speed up the process.
