Windows 11 24H2-25H2: Out-of-Band-Update KB5070773 fixes USB keyboard and mouse issues in WinRE

Windows[German]Microsoft has fixed the problems with USB keyboards and USB mice in Win RE with a special update KB5070773 for Windows 11. The problem was affected or fixed in Windows 11 24-H2 – 25H2. The affected USB devices should work again under Win RE. Here is a brief overview of the situation.

What is Win RE and what is the problem?

A bug slipped in with the installation of the dynamic security update KB5067039 (see Windows 10/11 Recovery Updates (Oct. 14, 2025)). When Win RE (which stands for Windows Repair Environment) was called up, USB keyboards and USB mice no longer worked under Windows 11 24-H2 – 25H2 and Windows Server 2025.

On October 17, 2025, Microsoft confirmed this bug in the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 25H2 Release Health Status page in the support articleUSB mouse and keyboard not working in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) (see Windows 10/11: USB keyboard/mouse doesn't work properly in WinRE).

In the support article, Microsoft states that the problem of USB devices such as keyboards and mice no longer working in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) only occurs after installing the Windows security updates released on October 14, 2025 (e.g., Update KB5066835).

German blog reader Bolko points out in this comment, that the error is caused by the USBHUB3.SYS file. In version 10.0.26100.6891, USB devices still worked in Win RE. With the SafeOS update KB5067039 from October 14, 2025, the faulty version 10.0.26100.6891 was then installed on the system, and USB devices such as mice and keyboards no longer work in Win RE. Out-of-band update KB5070773 with fix

On October 20, 2025, Microsoft updated the Known Issues post USB mouse and keyboard not working in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) on the Windows 11 25H2 Release Health Status page. It now states that the USB issue described above will be fixed by the out-of-band update KB5070773. Later cumulative updates will also include the fix.

The update is available for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 and will be automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update. Interestingly, the update in question is still listed as a "preview" in the Microsoft Update Catalog for Windows 11 24H2. Incidentally, the out-of-band update KB5070773 is a "slim" 3.933 GB in size because Microsoft is dragging its AI functions along with it.
