March 2026 Update Fixes Nvidia Graphics Issues in Windows 10

Windows[German]I'm going to break down a brief issue—along with its solution—in a separate blog post, one that has been plaguing Windows users since the January 2026 Patch Day. Certain Nvidia graphics chips experienced display issues, even on Windows 10, after the January 2026 security updates were installed. Readers report that the March 2026 update for Windows 10 resolves the issue.

A Look Back at the NVIDIA Graphics Issue in Windows 11

With the cumulative update KB5074109, rolled out on January 13, 2026, for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, users of NVIDIA graphics cards and chips began experiencing display issues. I had already mentioned these issues in the post Januar 2026 Patchday-Nachlese: Probleme mit Windows, Office etc ("January 2026 Patch Day Recap: Problems with Windows, Office, etc. and Other Bugs", including brief black screens that occurred in graphics applications.

There are also complaints on the Nvidia forum that users of GeForce GPUs observed a drop in gaming performance. The forum post quotes a user who reported a drop in frame rate of 15 to 20 FPS. In February 2026, Nvidia confirmed these issues, and I addressed the topic here on the blog on February 9, 2026, in the post Windows 11: Nvidia bestätigt Probleme mit dem Januar 2026 Update KB5074109 ("Windows 11: Nvidia Confirms Issues with the January 2026 Update KB5074109").

Windows 10 systems are also affected!

Apart from Windows 11, however, Windows 10 users have also commented on the post above here on the blog, reporting graphics issues related to the KB5073724 update. One comment states that devices freeze under OpenGL graphics load.

In this comment, another blog reader writes that he is experiencing the above issue on Windows 10 following the KB5034203 preview update from January 23, 2026. On an older laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M GPU and an i5-3230M CPU, the screen freezes approximately 1–2 minutes after startup. So there is no black screen, just a static display. The system continues to run normally, but with no graphics output at all. This essentially confirms the issue described by the first reader in the comment above.

March 2026 Update Fixes Windows 10 Graphics Issue

The Windows 10 security update KB5078885 from March 10, 2026 (Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (10. März 2026)) appears to resolve the above issues with the graphics output freezing. This is evident from this comment on the German blog.

The reader refers to the reddit.com thread Windows 10 KB5078885 ESU is out with fixes for a stability issue affecting certain GPU configurations. There, other users confirm that their issues with freezing Nvidia graphics output have finally been resolved.
