Macromedia Flash – Adobe Flash

It is already a dinosaur in the IT landscape of the year 2020. Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a platform for programming and displaying multimedia and interactive content. The first Flash version of Macromedia was generally released in 1997. Later, Adobe adopted the technology and developed it further.

Flash allows to display, animate and manipulate vector graphics, raster graphics and video clips. It supports the bidirectional streaming of audio and video content and, from version 11 of Adobe Flash Player (2011), also the display of 3D content.

Flash is scheduled to EOL by the end of 2020

Already in the summer of 2017, Adobe, together with Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla, announced the end of life for Flash and the end of Adobe Flash support. By the end of 2020, support for Flash updates should end and the Adobe Flash Player will no longer be available for download. Publishers who still rely on Flash should use the time to migrate content to new formats such as HTML5. Now there is a new announcement that Adobe Flash will definitely be out of support on December 31, 2020.

Adobe has set this on this website for Flash Player EOL. The 31.12.2020 marks the date when Adobe Flash will no longer be supported. The Flash Player will be removed from the download area.

Microsoft removes Flash from Windows

Microsoft made – in my eyes – the mistake of integrating Adobe Flash into Windows 8/(.1 and Windows 10 – there was no easy way to remove Flash. But in this blog post, Microsoft had announced the end of Adobe Flash Player at the end of 2020.

Starting in late 2020, the ability to run Adobe Flash in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer will be removed in all supported versions of Microsoft Windows. Then Flash will also disappear from the Windows world – as well as from Apple and other platforms.
