Preview update KB5043145 causes problems

The optional, cumulative (preview) update KB5043145 was released on September 26, 2024 for Windows 11 version 22H2 and 23H2. I had reported in the blog post Windows 11 23H2/22H2: Preview Update KB5043145 (September 26, 2024). Some German readers reported here some issues. Affected users receive BlueScreens or GreenScreens during operation. There are also reports that on some systems the auto-repair tool starts automatically after repeated restart attempts. In some cases, BitLocker recovery may also be triggered, prompting for the relevant recovery key. Microsoft has added a corresponding entry to the section on known problems with update KB5043145.

Microsoft provides a fix

On September 30, 2024, Microsoft published the article Microsoft is investigating reports of reboot issues in the Known Issues section of the Release Health Status. It confirms that there have been customer reports of problems after installing the September 2024 Preview Windows update (KB5043145). Windows 11 version 22H2 and 23H2 are affected. The error pattern is complex.

Systems would reboot several times or stop responding and display blue or green screens, it was said. On some devices, the automatic repair tool automatically appeared after repeated restart attempts, which attempts to diagnose and fix general problems at startup. In some cases, BitLocker recovery may also be triggered.

This update also causes USB and Bluetooth connections to fail on some devices. Hardware connected via USB and Bluetooth, such as keyboards, USB sticks, printers and wireless mice, will no longer work after installing the update. In these cases, the USB host controller displays a yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager.

These problems are resolved with the Known Issue Rollback (KIR). It may take up to 24 hours for the solution to take effect automatically on unmanaged devices. A restart can speed this up.
