Update KB5063878 and error 0x80240069

Cumulative Update KB5063878 for Windows 11 24H2, released August 12, 2025, includes quality improvements and security patches, but causes issues when installing via WSUS. Ich have received numerous reports that the installation aborts with error code 0x80240069.

I addressed this issue within my blog post Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5063878 causes installation error 0x80240069. Several workarounds are also presented there, from registry entries to importing the update in WSUS (see also the supplementary comment within my German blog). Due to the effort involved and the necessary reboots, some administrators are waiting.

Microsoft confirms the problem

Microsoft has now confirmed this issue in a support article dated August 14, 2025, and offers a KIR solution as a fix (thanks to readers for the tips). On August 13, 2025 (US time), Microsoft posted the support article August 2025 security update might fail to install via WSUS with Error 0x80240069 in the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard. It states that the Windows security update (KB5063878) from August 12, 2025, for Windows 11 24H2 may fail with error code 0x80240069 when installed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

WSUS enables servers with the WSUS role to defer, selectively approve, and schedule updates for specific devices or groups within an organization.

It is important to note that only distribution via WSUS is affected, not direct downloads via Windows Update from Microsoft Update servers. Home users should not be affected.

Microsoft states that only Windows 11 24H2 is affected by this issue. However, I have seen this German comment here in my German blog, which confirms that the issue also affects Windows Server 2025.

Workaround through Known Issue Rollback (KIR)

Microsoft states that a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) is available as a workaround for managed systems, which rolls back the problematic component. IT administrators in companies can resolve this issue by downloading, installing, and applying the following group policy:

According to the above description, the group policy in the KIR package should also apply to Windows Server 2025 (KB5063878).

In this German comment, a reader criticizes that "after activating the KIR entry and distributing it, the client PC still has to be rebooted." This is not a good solution, he says, because clients normally only reboot when a patch requires a restart.

German blog reader Tommy notes in this comment that manually importing the update in WSUS and rejecting automatic synchronization works without errors. He would therefore continue to prefer this approach.
