Security Updates for Windows 7/8.1 (October 2017)

Windows Update[German]On October 10, 2017 Microsoft released several security updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (and also for the corresponding server versions. Here's an overview.

Updates for Windows 7 SP1/Server 2008 R2 SP1

For Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 updates KB4041681 and KB4041678 has been released. The update history for Windows 7 may be found at this Microsoft page.

KB4041681 (Monthly Rollup) for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Update KB4041681 (October 10, 2017, Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) contains improvements and bug fixes and addresses the following issues:

  • Addressed issue with docking and undocking Internet Explorer windows.
  • Addressed issue with form submissions in Internet Explorer.
  • Addressed issue with URL encoding in Internet Explorer.
  • Addressed issue that prevents an element from receiving focus in Internet Explorer.
  • Addressed issue with the rendering of a graphics element in Internet Explorer.
  • Addressed issue where USBHUB.SYS randomly causes memory corruption that results in random system crashes that are extremely difficult to diagnose.
  • Security updates to Microsoft Windows Search Component, Windows kernel-mode drivers, Microsoft Graphics Component, Internet Explorer, Windows kernel, Windows Wireless Networking, Microsoft JET Database Engine, and the Windows SMB Server.

This update has a know issue: After installing KB4041681, package users may see an error dialog that indicates that an application exception has occurred when closing some applications. This can affect applications that use mshtml.dll to load web content. The failure only occurs when a process is already shutting down and will not impact application functionality. Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update. To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

KB4041678 (Security-only update) for Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 SP1

Update KB4041678 (October 10, 2017, Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) addresses the following issue:

Microsoft says there are no known issues. A blog reader told me via e-mail about install issues. After deactivating Windows Defender, the issue has been solved. This update will be offered via WSUS and is available for download via Microsoft Update Catalog.

    This update is causing my explorer to freeze for 5 minutes or more when a user logs in. i have a server 2008 x64
