Some background

I've discussed it several times within my blog (see link list at the end of this article): Since the beginning of the year, two serious vulnerabilities with the names Meltdown and Spectre have been coming public. Both vulnerabilities affects almost all computer systems and allow attacks to access information from the systems.

Meltdown/Spectre

There are no known attacks so far. But the OS vendors have begun hurriedly to provide patches. Especially under Windows there is considerable damage (see the article links at the end of this article).

Is my system vulnerable?

Since the vulnerabilities have become known, many users are asking : "Am I vulnerable with my system.?".

Ashampoo  Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker

German Ashampo GmbH has developed the Ashampoo® Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker for Windows. The free program does not need to be installed and is available for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

With the Ashampoo Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker, the user can check with one click if his system is vulnerable. It is interesting to note that the Ashampo tool uses Microsoft test routines, but without having to deal with the complicated inputs and configurations as a user and then interpret the cryptic results.

The Ashampoo Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker does not require any registration or installation, but can be started immediately. It is sufficient to double-click the downloaded program SpectreMeltdownCheck. exe and confirm the security query of the user account control.

The tool needs administrator privileges – and an Internet connection after the scan. So the decision whether you execute the software is yours.

As soon as the above window appears, click Test starten and wait until the program has checked the computer.

After testing the system, Ashampoo Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker posts the results of its findings (screenshot above). My Windows 7 SP1 machine is still vulnerable for Spectre. The links offered within the program's Windows are leading to this Asahmpo web page.

For a quick check, Ashampoo® Spectre Meltdown CPU Checker is a great tool. It is a pity that the tool does not provide more specific information about why one or the other vulnerability.

The program repeatedly doesn't work on my patched W8.1/64, even as administrator.

What I found out (from comments from my German blog readers): The program needs a) Internet access (due to the need to contact Ashampoo website with further information) – and b) need PowerShell working (but that's a bug, afaik).

  2. krzemien says:

It does work correctly on my home Win 8.1 x64 laptop (did not check my PC just yet) but surprisingly (or not?) fails & crashes on my work Win 7 x64 laptop.

  3. wyxchari says:

Error: He always tells me that he does not find powershell.
