The Office 2010 January 2019 Updates

On January 2, 2019, Microsoft made another attempt, to establish support for the new era in Japanese calendar. The following updates has been shipped for the msi based Office 2010 installations:

  • Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB4461627): Make changes to Japanese calendar – requires installation of additional updates from Dec./January.
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4032217): Make changes to Japanese calendar – requires installation of additional updates from Dec./January.
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4032225): Make changes to Japanese calendar – requires installation of additional updates from Dec./January.
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4461616): Make changes to Japanese calendar – requires installation of additional updates from Dec./January.

That's necessary because Japan's Tenno Akihito intends to resign in 2019. Therefore probably starting from 31.05./01.06.2019 a new area in Japanese calendar is required. So Updates for Office 2010 has been released to implement this change. I've reported about these updates within my blog post Microsoft Office Patchday (January 2, 2019).

Office 2010 January 2019 Updates pulled

I caught a cold a few days ago, so I stayed this week most time in bed, instead of blogging. So I didn't recognize some trouble with these updates. Addendum: Woody Leonhard mentioned here that Japanese-language sites are all lit up with warnings about the patches clobbering Excel. A Japanese user wrote, that Excel refused to start with an error message. This blog post sheds some more light into that thing – here is an English translation: At start of Excel, a voice saying "Excel can not be opened", some times Excel freezes. When the user is trying to enter characters, Microsoft Excel action stopped. After the user uninstalled update  KB4461627, the issue was gone.

Today I got a comment from a German blog reader, mentions, that he could not find the Office 2010 January 2, 2019, updates. So I checked Microsoft's update pages – and all four updates has been pulled:

  • Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB4461627)
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4032217)
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4032225)
  • Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4461616)

Microsoft wrote for all kb articles: After you install this update, you may experience difficulties in Microsoft Excel or other applications. Microsoft has pulled these updates and recommends uninstalling an installed update to avoid this issues.
