Update KB4509479 for Windows 10 V1809

Update KB4509479 raises the OS build to version 17763.593. The cumulative update addresses a bug in the Storage Area Network (SAN) area that causes connection issues after installing update KB4497934:

Addresses an issue that may prevent devices from connecting to some Storage Area Network (SAN) devices using Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) after installing KB4497934. You may also receive an error in the System log section of Event Viewer with Event ID 43 from iScsiPrt and a description of "Target failed to respond in time for a login request."

If previous updates are installed, only the new fixes in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows Update Enhancements

In addition, Microsoft directly updated the Windows Update Client to improve its reliability. The update is performed on any Windows 10 that has no update delay configured (also applies to Enterprise and Pro, but not to the LTSC editions).

Microsoft strongly recommends that you install the latest Service Stack Update (SSU) for Windows 10 before the Cumulative Update (LCU). The SSUs improve the reliability of the update installation of cumulative updates. If Windows Update is used, the latest SSU (KB4504369) should be installed automatically.

The optional update is available through the Update Search (go to the Windows Update page and click the Check for Updates button). The package can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog and installed manually.

A long list of known issues

Within the kb article Microsoft lists several know issues, caused by this update.

Symptom Workaround
Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, "STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)". This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn't have administrator privilege.

Do one of the following:

  • Perform the operation from a process that has administrator privilege.
  • Perform the operation from a node that doesn't have CSV ownership.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

After installing KB4493509, devices with some Asian language packs installed may receive the error, "0x800f0982 – PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT
_NOT_FOUND."
  1. Uninstall and reinstall any recently added language packs. For instructions, see Manage the input and display language settings in Windows 10.
  2. Select Check for Updates and install the April 2019 Cumulative Update. For instructions, see Update Windows 10.

Note If reinstalling the language pack does not mitigate the issue, reset your PC as follows:

  1. Go to the Settings app > Recovery.
  2. Select Get Started under the Reset this PC recovery option.
  3. Select Keep my Files.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

We are investigating reports that a small number of devices may startup to a black screen during the first logon after installing updates.
To mitigate this issue, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then select the Power button in the lower right corner of the screen and select Restart. Your device should now restart normally.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

These errors are already present in the last update packages. This shows the disadvantage of the cumulative update approach becomes visible. An error for a fix often takes months. So you have to decide whether to fix the above bugs and accept new bugs,

Updates for Windows 10 V1703 bis V1803

Updates with a fix for the above error are also available for older versions of Windows 10. Here are the relevant KB numbers:

  • KB4509478: For Windows 10 1803, raises the OS-Build to 17134.860,
  • KB4509477: For Windows 10 1709, raises the OS-Build to 16299.1239,
  • KB4509476: For Windows 10, 1703, raises the OS-Build to 15063.1898

Please note, however, that the Windows 10 versions 1703 and 1709 in the Home and Pro versions are no longer supported, only version 1803 will receive updates until November 2019. That means, the last mentioned updates above are only available for the Enterprise SKUs.

    Hi,

Thank you for your useful site, Can someone please advise why these re-released updates are listed in Windows Update Catalogue but not with WSUS/SCCM? Eg, for 1803 I only have KB4503286 whereas in the update catalogue KB4509478 supersedes the forementioned KB.

I have run mutliple syncs without any errors but still not seeing these listed.

    Thanks,

    Brent
