Game WWE2K20 and the Year 2020 Problem …

[German]Another funny thing about the start of the year – the game developer from Visual Concepts has run into a year 2020 problem. The game WWE2K20 has been finished since October 2019, but has been crashing since we wrote the year 2020.

What is WWE2K20?

WWE 2K20 is a professional wrestling video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. It was released worldwide on October 22, 2019 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Some details can be found in Wikipedia.

Above tweet shows an animated video from this game – the plot is pretty wacky – but it is probably marketed and bought by 2K Sports. Even on Amazon I found the Game.

The Year 2020 problem

Through security researcher Kevin Beaumont I became aware of the problem via Twitter.

The game crashes when launched on January 1, 2020, as confirmed by the support of the provider 2K Sports on Twitter. Here is a message with the photo of a crash.

Of course, a workaround has also been leaked – don't turn it off and on again, but set the clock back to 2019 (glad, we are not in the cloud).

For the game junkies who almost nearly died there, the following tweet contains a GIF with recommdations on how to kill time sensibly.

So the message is: W don't leave anyone alone – help is not far away. In the meantime, I can now announce that the 2K Sports support team has given the all-clear.
