Windows 10: Mozilla services cause sporadic freezes/crashes

[German]Brief information for users of Windows 10 who use products like the Firefox browser from Mozilla and suffer from freezes and crashes. This may be due to installed Mozilla software whose update and maintenance services cause problems, as one blog reader reported.

Freezes and crashes

German blog reader Ingo W. contacted me by mail a few days ago and reported a problem under Windows 10. He wrote about it in his mail

I have a problem that my notebook sporadically "freezes/crashes" from time to time. Nothing worked at all. Switching off with a long press on the power button and rebooting [was necessary].

The usual procedure would be to search the internet and look into the event display to see if there is an error and its cause. Ingo wrote about this:

In the Event Viewer I think I have found the cause or the error (see screenshot). It was probably recorded by accident, because not everything is recorded in case of a crash.

Here is a screenshot (click screenshot to zoom) of a Mozilla Maintenance Service error:

Fix: Deactivate services

Ingo then simply deactivated the respective services. This can be done in the Firefox browser. He wrote me the following:

After switching off the "service" in "Firefox" in "Settings" -> General – "Area" -> "Firefox Updates" -> "Allow Firefox" uncheck the box in front of Use a background service to install updates.

Here is the screenshot of a German firefox settings page.

Mozilla Hintergrunddienst deaktivieren

After that the problem with freezing and crashes under Windows 10 was gone. He then deactivated the Mozilla Maintenance Service (see the following screenshots).

As a disadvantage Ingo W. then mentions the following: Unfortunately you have to check the FF every now and then if a new version is available. The freezing or crashing of the laptop is gone now (used to happen several times a day). I just put the information into the blog – maybe it helps someone or there are some details about it. My thanks to Ingo W. for the hint.

I don't understand German to fully interpret the message, but after number 7023 you can see that this is an ordinary crash of service. It is highly unlikely that this event is responsible for freezing the laptop. Rather, the situation is the opposite. And the freeze indicates that the problem is in the code running in kernel mode. It can be a 3rd party driver but also an error in the system itself due to a specific hardware configuration. Especially when the system is on HDD, which configuration is poorly tested by Microsoft and does not fit the modern I/O subsystem load.

Almost in the last 12 months my computer freeze/hangs ramdomly. My inicial OS Windows 1909, then Windows 20H2 and now 1909 again. I tried all issues mencioned on internet.
First SSD issues, PSU, Printer, GPU, USB and audio problems.
Then decided to check windows system.
    Sfc /scannow
    Dism
    Chkdsk
    Restart new operacional system
    Check windows updates
    Check all drivers
    Desactivate windows defender gpedit.msc
Modify power management, disk, PCI, fast start.

Until then no solution at all….
Desperated to realise an harware problem or an windows OS bug withou solution.

But finaly i've read your report about firefox.
And afther that, my painfull finaly ended.

When i desactivate de firefox on msconfig, my problem about windows 1909 or 20H2 freezeing or hanging, gone for now.

Thanks for you report. Im grateful.

Thanks. It worked for me. Brand new HP laptop on Windows 10 kept freezing randomly while using Firefox. After lots of troubleshooting and time wasted I have read your post, and voila switching to Chrome solved the problem.

Firefox works great on Ubuntu Linux, this is unfortunate that this happened to Windows version. Hopefully, Mozilla is going to fix it eventually.
