In this (German) comment on the blog pos Edge Edge 90.0.818.39 als Sicherheitsupdate, one affected person describes his observation:

When I check for updates this morning on 2 PCs in Edge I get ithe error message:

An error occurred while checking for updates: Unable to connect to the Internet. If you use a firewall, please allowlist MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe. (error code 7: 0x800421F7 — system level).

Internet is OK. Do you have the same problem? Does MS have problems with the update servers for a short time?

This error message was confirmed by several users. One user reported that when refreshing the update search several times, the error sometimes occurred, sometimes not.

Error 0x800421F7: Internet connection problems

Error code 0x800421F7 indicates Internet connection issues between the Edge updater and Microsoft update servers. This article also lists the error text Can't connect to the Internet or an error occurred while checking for updates for this error code. When this error message is displayed, the general advice is to check the Internet connection and proxy settings.

You can try running the network connection troubleshooter, using custom DNS settings, or resetting the network adapter to resolve this error message. In the current case, however, it seems that the Microsoft update servers are simply having trouble delivering the Edge update. The updater is running into a timeout and throwing the error message. German blog reader Klaus addressed it in this comment as well. .

My advice is to simply wait a few hours and do nothing. Then the error should disappear. If not, you can go through the methods mentioned here or here to fix the internet connection problems.

Yes today I just update to latest 90.0.818.39 version too, and I get "An error occurred while checking for updates: Unable to connect to the Internet. If you use a firewall, please allowlist MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe. (error code 7: 0x800421F7 — system level)"

I checking my internet and firewall, nothing wrong at all

So I think the error is come from microsoft server

Idem sur mon PC Windows…Je vais attendre un peu sans rien bidouiller.

Paul, la procédure de mise à jour fonctionne chez moi à l'instant. Le problème est donc résolu.

  3. DELEGLISE PATRICK says:

Same issue on my Laptop. Problem with microsoft server I think too. No reason to modify some parameters, or reinstall Microsoft Edge. I'm just waiting for.

I am just update my Microsoft Edge browser to version 90.0.818.39 and I waited for the update to download longer than usual, but after that, restart the browser and it is working fine.

Looks like a great many are having the same problem. https://twitter.com/zacbowden/status/1383061830692659206

  8. Ziggy says:

If you have Google Chrome installed, try update Chrome to latest version first, after that try to update Edge again, the error should gone and continue to update to latest version.

  9. EP says:

probably an MS server overload as one user in Ten forums put it:

    https://www.tenforums.com/browsers-email/148535-latest-microsoft-edge-released-windows-post2199879.html#post2199879

just wait several hours later and try again

  10. Shoko says:

You can download and run the Edge installer over the old installed version if you can't wait.

I think the issue might be their servers that are causing the problem. As mentioned, you can just wait till MS resolves this problem on their side.

Thanks, that was the suggestion I also received from other German blog reader – may help.

  11. Nathan says:

Same here on the east coast of US. No problems downloading any other files and system updates, just the same error code with Edge browser update.

  12. JP says:

The edge update is finally working fine, but I have the "error update" on each component at edge://components.

    :(

  13. EP says:

    MS recently released 90.0.818.41, guenni
though some people are still getting update errors with the .41 build
