Windows 10: Update KB5003173 fails with error 0x800f0922

Windows[German]Another short addendum to this week's May patchday. Some users are finding that the Windows 10 cumulative update KB5003173 cannot be installed. Instead, the update installation fails with error 0x800f0922. The cause is the Legacy Edge browser removed from the Windows 10 build. Here is some information about it.

Update KB5003173 for Windows 10 Version 2004/20H2

Cumulative Update KB5003173 dated May 13, 2021 is available for Windows 10 version 2004, Windows 10 version 20H2, and Windows Server version 2004 and Windows Server version 20H2. It includes quality improvements but no new operating system features. I had described the update in the blog post Patchday: Windows 10 updates (May 11, 2021) and at the same time mentioned that Microsoft had already removed the legacy Edge browser from the Windows 10 build in April 2021. This is now causing install issues.

Update KB5003173 fails with error 0x800f0922

Shortly after the release of update KB5003173, users reported that its installation fails with error 0x800f0922. At the Microsoft Q&A forum there is this thread:

Windows 10 2021-05 KB5003173 Fails if Edge Uninstalled? errorCode 0x800f0922

Updating a number of Windows 10 20H2 machines. Some fail. Those that fail have Edge uninstalled.
This hasnt happened in the past. It is happening now. It would be nice to apply security updates that work.

The original poster suspects that the error has to do with the removed Legacy Edge. The error pattern has been confirmed by other users.  At the colleagues of deskmodder.de, user DK2000 has analyzed it. The reason is that the Edge Advanced Installer (EdgeAI) creates an empty folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\

and then looks for the file Edge.dat there, but does not find it. This leads to the error ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND and in the installer to the error 0x800f0922.

Fixes for this install issue

There are some hints in the Q&A forum in this thread, and Jenny Feng from Microsoft gives the following hint at the end of the Q&A section to solve the installation problem:

If you would like to install Windows 10 KB5003173, you have two choices:

1. Manually download and install Microsoft Edge again and install the Windows 10 KB5003173 update again.
2. Delete the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge" folder and reinstall the Windows 10 KB5003173 cumulative update.

You can also wait for the latest update to see if this can be resolved.

Afterwards, the installation of the update KB5003173 should be tried again. The error 0x800f0922 should then no longer occur.
