Outlook: Login error since the last June 2022 update

[German]I just got a user information on my desk that there are problems with the user login in Microsoft Outlook "since the last update" (probably from June 2022). Problem seems to be that the program can no longer distinguish between two online accounts. Here is the information I have so far.

What the user observed

German blog reader Alexander Jacubowsky is an IT service provider and was contacted by a customer who suddenly had problems with his Outlook client. Alexander describes the whole thing like this:

I've got something for you again.

The customer calls me and says his email no longer works in Outlook. It always says that he should log in because the password has expired.

He clicks on "Password". A window frame appears for a fraction of a second, which immediately disappears. Furthermore, he is not logged in.

Alexander then tried to help the customer. After a long search and several attempts, during which he also then shot down Teams at the customer, there was then the following display under this program:

The error code 0c0000022 has been reported. Logging in is no longer possible, because in Microsoft Teams there is always this corresponding error message, while in Outlook no error message is displayed at all.

Finding the root cause

The error code 0c0000022 actually says that the application cannot start correctly and indicates some access conflicts (see also this MS Answers forum thread from 2017). Doesn't help though. At this point, Alexander then contacted Microsoft support. Micosoft support then politely informed Alexander Jakubowsky that they now have several customers with this problem. Alexander then writes about the cause:

The cause is relatively banal. The customer has a Microsoft Office 365 Business account. And logs in with the @onmicrosoft.com address. And [he]has entered his business email address (abc@xyz.com) as another email address in the account. [The] email account in Outlook was also set up with this customer's own domain, which has worked fine so far.

Now to the point: there is also a personal account with the same personal email address (abc@xyz.com) of the customer.

Apparently Outlook can no longer determine. Whether now Business or Personal [to be used as email] and tries to log in only to the Personal [Microsoft account].

The same problem exists with Teams. However, the error message from Teams is completely misleading.

The question that remains is how to solve it. Alexander has outlined it briefly, but still has to test whether it really works. He writes: The solution looks as follows, whereby I do not know yet whether it actually works, but it should actually. I will know in about 48 – 72 hours.

In the personnel account, replace the corresponding email address (abc@xyz.com) with another email address and then delete the duplicate email address (abc@xyz.com).

After that, if desired, the account can be deactivated or closed.

At this point my thanks to Alexander Jakubowsky, and at the same time the question if anyone else is affected? Is there another explanation or a workaround?
