Microsoft Office 365 version 2206 fixes cloud access crash bug

[German]Microsoft has released a new version 2206 (build 16.0.15330.20230) in the Current Channel. This version is intended to fix crashes in Office applications that caused crashes in Word, Excel and PowerPoint when accessing cloud documents in the old Office 365 version 2205.

Crashes with cloud operations

As of June 14, 2022, Microsoft had released version 2205 (build 15225.20288) in the Current Channel of Microsoft Office (see this Microsoft page). However, users then experienced problems with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These Apps may have closed unexpectedly when users tried to access (open, close, save, upload or download) cloud files in Office 365 version 2205.

No errors were displayed when the application was suddenly closed. I did some searching, but in a hurry only found a post Office Update today (04 July 2022) to V 2205 Build 15225.20288 Problem, dated from July 4, 2022, in the Microsoft Answers forum.

Prompted to update. Did. Now the file open dialog "crashes" Excel, even in "Safe-Mode"

Opening certain xlsm file works other also result in Excel immediately terminating.

The user investigated the whole thing and found that the error only affects files stored on OneDrive and not locally. Other users confirm crash problems. A second MS Answers forum post also describes crashes without error messages. More users there confirm this problem, and on July 8, 2022, a user reports that the problem has been fixed by an update.

Microsoft fixes the bug

On July 8, 2022, Microsoft updated the support article Word, Excel, and PowerPoint close unexpectedly when trying to open cloud documents in Office Version 2205. The post confirms the crashes for Excel for Microsoft 365, Word for Microsoft 365, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365. .

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint may close unexpectedly when you open, close, save, upload, or download cloud files in Office 365 version 2205.  No errors are displayed when the application is closed suddenly.

Microsoft has fixed this bug in Office 365 version 2206 and writes:

For customers using the Current Channel for Microsoft 365 applications, the issue has been fixed in Office 365 version 2206 (build 16.0.15330.20230).  The fix is being distributed to users via an update.

Users can manually install the update by opening the Office app and selecting File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. Microsoft notes that customers using the monthly Enterprise Channel for Microsoft 365 apps are not affected. Microsoft plans to include the fix in version 2205, which will be released with the monthly update in July.

Microsoft also notes that this issue does not affect customers who are in the biannual Enterprise Channel. The fix should be included in the upgrade of these channels to version 2205 or later versions. (via)

Within my German blog I have not received any information from the readership regarding this. There is only the discussion about an Excel display bug (see German comment at Office 365 Version 2206.15330.20196: Excel-Bug verhindert Anzeige von Zellinhalten (OP396850), English edition of the article Office 365 version 2206.15330.20196: Excel bug prevents display of cell contents (OP396850)). Perhaps those affected can provide feedback on whether build 16.0.15330.20230 also fixes this bug.
