Reminder: UUP updates for Windows coming March 28, 2023

Windows[German]Brief reminder for administrators in enterprise environments. On March 28, 2023, Microsoft will turn on its Unified Update Platform (UUP). This applies to Windows 11 version 22H2 for now and is intended to bring the power of Windows Update and Windows Update for Business to local Windows clients. It will be delivered with an update, but administrators may need to prepare WSUS or SCCM accordingly.

The Unified Update Platform (UUP)

Microsoft plans to make quality update distribution available via the Unified Update Platform (UUP) starting in late March 2023 for Windows 11 version 22H2. The platform is intended to enable smaller and simpler updates, as Microsoft explained on Feb. 9, 2023, in the article Get ready for the first UUP on premises updates coming in March.

UUP works on-premises with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft Configuration Manager. However, to enable update distribution, administrators must prepare these management solutions. That's because UUP will become the standard and only way to download quality updates.

On March 28, 2023, a one-time 10GB download for updates for Windows 11, version 22H2 per architecture (AMD64 and ARM64) will be distributed on the distribution points (WSUS, SCCM, see above figure, not on endpoint clients). I had reported about this endeavor in the blog post Windows: Unified Update Platform will get active end of March 2023, prepare WSUS.

Microsoft reminds of UUP

Late last week, Microsoft reminded administrators of this change as of March 28, 2023 (Tuesday, D-Week) – the following tweet from ariaupdated addresses administrators in this regard.

Microsoft UUP-Vorbereitung

There is a FAQ from Microsoft in the Techcommunity FAQ: WSUS and Unified Update Platform (UUP) on premises, which addresses questions around Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and its preparation for UUP. For example, starting with Windows Server 2012, WSUS will support UUP-style updates.

MIME type support

However, it is important that administrators ensure that the required MIME types are correctly defined for UUP on premises to work with the current WSUS infrastructure. While these MIME types will be set automatically by installing the update for KB5022286 (for Windows Server 2019) and KB5022291 (for Windows Server 2022). The updates add support for the .wim and .msu file types that are required for UUP updates. If WSUS Server already had these MIME types configured elsewhere, the following error message is displayed:

Cannot add duplicate collection entry of type 'mimeMap' with unique key attribute 'fileExtension' set to '.wim'.

If this error occur, Microsoft mentions two possible solutions in the FAQ: WSUS and Unified Update Platform (UUP) on premises. Administrators of WSUS instances are advised to also read the other notes in the FAQ in order to be prepared for the distribution of quality updates via UUP via WSUS in April 2023.
