Windows 11 22H2: Bug in speech recognition by update KB5022913

Windows[German]It is an exotic bug that Microsoft has just confirmed for Windows 11 22H2. After installing the update KB5022913, there can be sporadic problems in the language recognition of the operating system. However, the whole thing only occurs when Chinese or Japanese language inputs are made. So it should only affect a few readers of this blog.

It's a new entry Intermittent issues with speech recognition when using Chinese or Japanese in the Known-Issues section of the Windows 11 22H2 Release Health status page, dated May 2, 2023. There Microsoft writes:

After installing KB5022913 or later updates, some apps might have intermittent issues with speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting when using Chinese or Japanese languages. Affected apps might sometimes fail to recognize certain words or might be unable to receive any input from speech recognition or affected input types. This issue is more likely to occur when apps are using offline speech recognition.

Note for app developers: This issue only affects speech recognition using Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS) in Windows.Media.SpeechRecognition. Other implementations of speech recognition are not affected.

If update KB5022913, or a follow-up update, is installed on Windows 11 22H2, some apps may experience intermittent issues with speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting when using Chinese or Japanese languages. Affected apps sometimes fail to recognize certain words or cannot receive input from speech recognition or affected input types. This issue is more likely to occur when using offline speech recognition in apps.

Microsoft provides advice for developers of such apps in the support post and has also suggested a workaround. If the problem occurs, users should terminate the disturbed application as well as the ctfrmon.exe process in the task manager. This should restart automatically. If the app is started afterwards, the speech recognition should work again.

Update KB5022913 is the "Moments 2 update", which was rolled out as a preview in February 2023 and regularly in March 2023. The update is responsible for a number of issues (see link list at the end of the article). Microsoft is working on a solution that only affects Windows 11 22H2 and wants to provide a fix in one of the next updates. (via)
