Windows 11: SSD drive performance issues fixed by August 2023 updates?

Windows[German]Since Microsoft released the March 2023 security updates for Windows 11, some users have complained about performance issues with SSD drives. It mainly affects SSD NVMEs that act as boot drives. Now I've come across a report that these performance issues with SSDs have been resolved by the August 2023 security updates for a majority of those affected.

Performance issues with (SSD) boot drives

After the release of the March 14, 2023 cumulative security updates for Windows 11, reports are surfacing on the Internet that the performance of SSD drives has noticeably decreased following the update installation. Uninstalling the March 14, 2023 security update causes SSDs to return to their original read/write rates. However, it does not seem to be a general problem, but depends on the SSD models used.

Windows 11: SSD slow after March 2023 update

I had come across the topic via Martin Brinkmann's tweet above and had addressed the issue in the March blog post Windows 11: March 14, 2023 updates slow down some (SSD NVME) boot drives.

Improvements through August 2023 updates

I haven't monitored the topic, but came across the following tweet the other day linking to this article from Windows Latest. The website has stayed on the topic and reports partial success.

Microsoft had already released optional preview updates in July 2023, whose fixes were then included in the official security update for Windows 11 on August 8, 2023. Windows Latest writes about this that they had already noticed an improvement in SSD performance with the optional update from July 2023. Thus, the fix was rolled out to all Windows 11 22H2 owners via the August 2023 update (KB5029263). One user wrote Windows Latests:

"I manage a fleet of systems, and the sluggish SSD issue from the March update was a glaring anomaly. Had to provisionally look for third-party solutions just to keep things moving. With the August update now deployed across the board, I see consistent disk performance across our devices. Grateful for the fix, but it's a reminder of how crucial thorough testing is before rolling out any software updates."

In this case, the August 2023 updates seem to have brought the hoped-for improvement for the affected user. Windows Latest writes, however, that the fix probably did not solve the problem for all affected users. But the situation has definitely improved – the details can be read in their blog post.
