Adobe Acrobat Reader 24.002.20687: Crashes on RDS server

[German]I got several reports from administrators, facing issues with Adobe Acrobat Reader 24.002.20687 in a RDS server environment. It seems that the Adobe Acrobat Reader is crashing since mid April 2024, due to a "test version" integrated in the newest software version.

A German blog reader contacted me recently and wrote, that he encountered a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader on an RDS server on April 23, 2024 (thanks for the tip). In his environment, Adobe Acrobat Reader crashes when the program is closed. The person concerned is not alone and immediately sent me a link to the post Adobe Reader has stopped working from April 17, 2024 in the Adobe community. There, another affected person writes that Adobe Reader probably crashes after an update from April 12, 2024.

Log Name:      Application

Adobe Reader keeps crashing after an update on 04/12/2024.

Adobe Acrobat Reader has stopped working

Adobe Acrobat Reader is also used there in an RDS environment. The error code 0xc000041d in the AcroRd32.dll program is reported in the log file. The error code 0xC000041d stands for STATUS_FATAL_USER_CALLBACK_EXCEPTION, i.e. an unhandled user exception of the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

If you browse through the thread in the Adobe community, a number of other affected users confirm this crash in RDS server environments. The last entry I saw was from April 29, 2024. Adobe only states in the thread that they are working on the bug and investigating it.

One possibility is to try a rollback to a previous version. There is another thread after closing adobe reader comes "Not Respond" dated April 17, 2024 in the Adobe community. Someone there has published the following additional workaround:

  • After opening Adobe Acrobat Reader, click on "Menu" -> "Deactivate new Acrobat Reader".
  • Then restart Adobe Acrobat Reader and check whether the problem is solved.

However, it is said that this setting does not apply to all users of the same PC. The setting must be made again for each new user who logs on to this system.

The crash is probably related (according to a post in this thread) to a new feature and the "Free 7-day trial" info window that is supposed to appear in the bottom left corner. If users wait long enough for the pop-up to disappear, the reader should not crash. If the Reader is closed before the prompt appears, it crashes. This problem only occurs in Adobe Acrobat Reader 24.002.20687. Are any of you affected? Is there a known fix from Adobe?

It's not limited to RDS, but also happens on desktop systems. You just don't see crash window because that's how Microsoft set things up. If you close Adobe Reader and it get's "stuck" for a few seconds, that's when it crashes and windows just collects crash dump. Check your system's event log to confirm.
