Windows 11 update KB5040442 causes issues with Outlook 2021

[German]Quick question for the readership: Are there any problems with Windows 11 23H2 if the preview update KB5039302 from June 2024 or the security update KB5040442 from July 2024 is installed? I have received reports that links can no longer be opened in Outlook 2021. There are also problems with third-party applications that rely on Outlook and the MAPI interface.

Updates Patchday Juliy2024

On July 9, 2024, Microsoft released various security updates for its products. In Microsoft Office, for example, two vulnerabilities CVE-2024-38020 (Microsoft Outlook Spoofing Vulnerability) and CVE-2024-38021 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability) were closed. Various fixes were made in Windows 11 23H2 with the cumulative update KB5040442 (see also Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (July 9, 2024)).

Outlook 2021 no longer opens links

In this German comment, blog reader danz reports that links in Outlook 2021 no longer open after installing the update. Since the comment was written for the article Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (July 9, 2024), I assume it concerns the cumulative update KB5040442 for Windows 11 23H2. However, in a quick search I have not found any other reports regarding the problem so far.

In July 2023 I had the post Outlook 2016: Links broken after update from July 11, 2023 (KB5002427) – Security warning appears when clicking links, which also addressed broken links.

KB5040442: Third-party software fails

In this German comment blog reader Mossi reported of problems with a third-party application in connection with Outlook. Both the preview update KB5039302 from June 2024 and the security update KB5040442 from July 2024 cause a problem for a customer with an invoicing program that no longer works correctly with Outlook and MAPI.

The user describes that the invoice is transferred to Outlook in the software for further processing. Depending on whether Outlook has already been opened or not, the editing window for composing an email should open. However, after installing the updates mentioned above, there is a problem. Despite transferring the invoice data to Microsoft Outlook, the editor window no longer opens. It is only indicated that another software wants to access the Outlook window.

From this point on, Outlook and the program has to be closed via the task manager. The invoicing software also hangs during the transfer, but then notices the "termination" and then runs normally again, writes the reader.

Office 365 is used and after uninstalling KB5039302 and/or KB5040442, the invoice transfer to Outlook works again. Both Office 365 and the invoicing software are up to date, the reader states and writes that measures such as uninstalling and reinstalling Office have not helped. Can anyone confirm this?

One Response to Windows 11 update KB5040442 causes issues with Outlook 2021

    Hi Günter,

Yes, we have a thread in the Answers forum for Microsoft Access where several people report that since this KB update Outlook hangs when automated with Access/VBA. Uninstalling the update helps: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/accessoutlook-freeze/7aab1bc8-f00a-4f82-b79c-58dd397bcc90

I think we will soon write a bug documenting article at AFo for the Access community as we did for a printer driver problem fixed by this update and caused by previous KB updates: https://www.accessforever.org/post/windows-generic-text-only-printer-driver-fails-with-access-reports

It's a bit of a mess with the Windows summer updates. ;-)
